BTS Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2020 Author Posted December 7, 2020 Keegan Matheson @KeeganMatheson #BlueJays have claimed RHP Anthony Castro off waivers from the Detroit Tigers. Castro, 25, was ranked by @MLBPipeline as Detroit’s No. 17 prospect. He pitched at Double A in 2019 and made one MLB appearance in 2020. Longenhagen didn't even have him in Detroit's top-40 in his pre-season list.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 Longenhagen didn't even have him in Detroit's top-40 in his pre-season list. He's got 2 options, and a plus fastball (apparently) and he was free, so... I'm okay with this.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 I'd be a little worried about the possibility of cancer relapse with Carrasco. You would think that would have to factor into the acquisition cost though, so maybe the prospect capital required would be lessened a bit. I mean I wouldn't sell the farm for him but seems like the price wouldn't be that high given his age as well. Although I have a feeling Cleveland wouldn't trade him to any team without Carrasco's approval given his cancer past as well as that extremely team friendly contract he signed, but who knows.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Of course. I'll be mildly surprised if he isn't waived again this offseason though. Both Castro and Lockett will be waived for sure after we make acquisitions, they'll just hope they squeeze through the process, happens every year.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Sure, I'd love to have a superstar at every position, but we have a lot of holes to fill, and limited budget. SS is not an area of weakness. Starting pitching is a shambles, and in my opinion, Bichette produces less value to us by shifting to 2B or 3B. And I hate the idea of putting almost a third of our annual salary on a single player. And if he pulls a Vernon Wells or a Tulo, we're totally f***ed. Even if he plays well, we're really limiting our options. We could get three decent players for the price of one of Lindor.

Kim is such a great fit for the Jays roster, he can play third base on a regular basis and provide cover for short stop in case of a Bichette injury.

His numbers are fantastic, but I have absolutely no idea how KBO numbers generally translate to the MLB... Even if KBO was AA quality, at 25 he looks like a good bet to put up reasonable numbers, but someone else might be better suited to suggest how the numbers might play out.

Can play SS/3B and is only 25. Would fit nicely with the current group.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Who was that SS for the Rays from the KBO who was supposed to be the next great thing and is now back in the KBO and around 30 yrs old..... I think it was like around 2016... That one didn't work out so well..

Zips projections for Kim are very positive, he's projected to be a nearly 4 win player right away: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/ha-seong-kim-has-big-mlb-aspirations-and-projections/ I've read others have concerns about whether he'll be able to hit MLB velocity or not (Keith Law looks to have a fair bit of skepticism) as his swing is a bit on the longer side.

The next question is what would it take to get him? I saw someone on MLBTR suggest 5/50 which is peanuts (UNLESS HE'S RANDALL GRICHUK WHOSE CONTRACT IS THE BIGGEST TRAVESTY OF ALL TIME!!!), and at that price I like him more than Wong, and maybe even more than Lindor (depending on how that would shake out in terms of assets we gave up in trade + eventual contract). He definitely meets a team need, IF he can hit that velocity...

I doubt we'll see any movement on a Lindor trade until Kim's situation is resolved.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 That changes quite a bit, actually.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 That changes quite a bit, actually. Yeah, the original tweet made it sound like Ryu was helping to recruit Kim. Turns out Kim just wanted to have dinner, and you know Ryu ain't turning down a meal. We don't know how the Jays even value Kim as nothing has been reported about it (to my knowledge), so who knows. If the Jays are interested in him, then a dinner with Ryu where the Jays org may have been discussed couldn't hurt.
