jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 We are assuming the draft order will be determined the same way it has been in past drafts, correct? Assuming each team plays all 60 regular season games this season.

Laika Community Moderator Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 I found the swing I want Toronto to draft: That is absurd.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2020 Posted August 18, 2020 Didn't run after he hit the ball. If the guy doesn't respect the unwritten rules, he won't respect the actual rules either. Brett Lawrie 2.0 No thanks.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2020 Author Posted August 18, 2020 I have a whole bunch of guys on my list to cover, been a little busy to do a writeup for them. Hopefully have time in September to post a few of them. The more I dig into the draft, it looks like there are some promising talent up top. The college bat crop might surprise some people and really intriguing prep talent. Hopefully we’ll get a decision from the MLB about the structure of the 2021 draft order.

The move to July will tie the 2021 MLB draft into All-Star weekend. July 11 is the Sunday before the All-Star Game, allowing MLB to include draftees in one of the biggest weeks of the MLB season.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2020 Posted September 28, 2020 We would pick 19th if MLB chooses to go with traditional best to worst record with the draft. We would be 20th but the Astro's don't have their pick again.
SydneyJay Verified Member Posted September 28, 2020 Posted September 28, 2020 Are drafted players typically in their late teens? And does the draft cover certain leagues or all ‘minor’ leagues? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk They either get drafted out of high school (18) or out of college (20-22). After being drafted the team/organization will decide what level they believe they're ready for (AAA, AA, high A, low A, etc.).

Also, only players from the US, Canada and Puerto Rico are eligible for the draft. Everyone else falls under international signee rules, including the DR, Mexico, Venezuela. Cubans have to defect to and establish residence in a different country before they are able to sign.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2020 Posted September 28, 2020 I think it's pretty f***ed up to just go by 2020 standings for the draft order. It is. But this is MLB. Nothing would surprise me.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2020 Posted September 28, 2020 I think it's pretty f***ed up to just go by 2020 standings for the draft order. They'll likely combine overall records from '19 and '20 or something like that, I wouldn't worry about it until they officially announce the format.

metafour Verified Member Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 I think it's pretty f***ed up to just go by 2020 standings for the draft order. Why is that f***ed up? They literally just decided the playoffs based off of 2020 standings. They have already decided that this is to be a "full season", therefore the draft position should follow the same line.

It's f***ed up because in no way does that benefit the Jays draft position for 2021. And if it doesn't benefit the Jays then things have to change. That's the only thing that matters.

While I don't really have a strong opinion on the draft order, they're two different things... This whole season is going to have a giant * next to it in every record book regardless, and the draft order could impact a team for a decade...

Of course, but they've already set the precedent and therefore this should only logically follow suite. There WILL be a "champion" crowned for this 60-game season; it seems silly to then turn around and say that 60-games isn't enough to determine the draft order for next year.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Any idea where we would pick in this situation? Combining 2019 & 2020 and using winning %, the Jays would pick 9th.
Ray Verified Member Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 I would prefer 2019 and 2020 combined. Jays would pick quite high despite making the playoffs. I think it makes a lot of sense to base it off W-L record in last 162 games played.

We'll find out shortly after the WS... I wouldn't sweat it. Picking 9th sounds like a sweet deal.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 I read last week that MLB has already hinted/implied that they will just go with 2020 standings. Yeah Jeff Pasan reported last week that it was "highly likely" they keep normal standing draft order.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2020 Posted October 6, 2020 I prefer they just go with this year's standings. Using last year's means you're giving a team two first round picks for one s***** year. They already got rewarded last year. Wouldn't mind seeing a weighted lottery for the non-playoff teams though. But this year will suck for drafting anyways, as there's been so little baseball, the scouting reports are going to be a joke. There's so much movement between the beginning and end of the year on the draft boards, and this year, they'll largely be going off what they already knew from last year. It will be a real krapshoot. The difference between 1-1 and 1-30 has never been so small.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2020 Posted October 6, 2020 I read last week that MLB has already hinted/implied that they will just go with 2020 standings. Manfred: “Its just a bunch of no-name high school kids anyways, who really cares?”
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2020 Posted November 24, 2020 Prospects Live has us selecting this guy... Christian MacLeod LHP, Mississippi St. The Blue Jays are a tough team to nail down, though they have had a tendency to go data-driven on the pitching side. Christian MacLeod is a burgeoning lefty who's yet to throw the amount of innings necessary to really blow up on national radars. In just 21 innings this year, he punched out 35 hitters, walking just 6. It's three 55-grade pitches in the fastball, curve and change up. The fastball and curveball have underlying metrics that suggest they play up quite a bit. MacLeod is another guy that could see his name in top ten consideration after shoving for 50 more innings next spring.
