BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 We know Austin Martin is a plus-plus hitter, but what about his other tools? ^—ridiculous
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 I have seen some experts already say Martin is our 2nd best prospect, leapfrogging Groshans. Holy s***.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Maybe they aren't expecting to sign everyone. Give Martin $7M+, and negotiate tough with the other draftees. If one drops, so be it. Yeah, I agree. If we lose one of the five we drafted to get this guy signed and happy, it's worth it. Would $1M over be necessary?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 I have seen some experts already say Martin is our 2nd best prospect, leapfrogging Groshans. Holy s***. I agree with this assessment.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 One other thing about Martin: Its not worth it to him to re-enter the draft if you think you can get an extra 1M next year when you as talented as he is. He's a guy when he's a FA is going to be worth 20+M per year and being a year older when he becomes a FA is just going to decrease his future earnings. Boras knows that as well. Also he could end up in a s***** Org. next year. Toronto is a great situation to go into with being one of the top 10 teams in player development and with lots of talent coming throug the system. Those are all great points. It doesn't hurt that we signed one of Boras's big clients in the offseason I wager.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 I agree with this assessment. Man, we have a deep, awesome, controllable infield. Just have to work on that OF.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Man, we have a deep, awesome, controllable infield. Just have to work on that OF. I like Martin as a CF for this team as it stands...
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 I have seen some experts already say Martin is our 2nd best prospect, leapfrogging Groshans. Holy s***. Keith Law: I can’t get over.. I’m not the only person who thought that Austin Martin is the best player in the class. I know several scouts who agreed. And the data kinda supports it. You look at how he played at a better conference than Spencer Torkelson, he’s second and not like he’s a BAD prospect. Austin Martin played better competition, plays a skilled position, strikes-out way less, still makes a ton of hard contact, still gets on-base. I’m taking that guy over Torkelson everyday. And the fact that he got to the 5th pick, I have a feeling it’s because he was insisting on full-slot, but that’s the Blue Jays benefit, and they just got their new no. 1 prospect. I really think, pretty clearly, they got the best player in the draft class.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Keith Law: Pearson has, for all intents and purposes, graduated to the MLB, so calling Martin our #1 prospect isn't QUITE as crazy as it seems...
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Imagine our Arizona Fall League team: Bats: Austin Martin Jordan Groshans Alejandro Kirk Orelvis Martinez Miguel Hiraldo Gabriel Moreno Griffin Conine Otto Lopez Dasan Brown Rotation: Nate Pearson Alek Manoah Simeon Woods-Richardson Adam Kloffenstein Kendall Williams Patrick Murphy CJ Van Eyk Thomas Hatch Just STACKED! I’m not even including Estiven Machado, and Rikelvin de Castro, and Eric Pardinho (recovering)
Ray Verified Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Van Eyk will receive a signing bonus higher than the $1,771,100 slotted for his pick. “That’s always what you kind of what you have to go through, figuring out your number and figuring out if teams can meet that number or at least come close to it,” Van Eyk said. “Luckily the Blue Jays were able to do that and I think it was smooth sailing going in.” Van Eyk has apprently come to terms with the Jays and will be above slot, according to this article: https://www.tampabay.com/sports/high-schools/2020/06/11/former-steinbrenner-pitcher-cj-van-eyk-is-first-tampa-bay-player-drafted/

P2F Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Here's Ross Atkins talking about the draft haul and process. I enjoyed this. https://www.sportsnet.ca/590/lead-off/ross-atkins-drafting-austin-martin-blue-jays-competitiveness-short-season/
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 (edited) https://www.tsn.ca/gm-ross-atkins-holding-out-hope-blue-jays-can-play-in-toronto-this-summer-1.1485373?tsn-amp&__twitter_impression=true Atkins is encouraged by the early conversations with the Boras camp. “We were prepared for that and worked through that scenario and have had dialogue with his representation, as well,” Atkins said. “We felt very good about making the selection.” That could still leave the Jays in a bind if they want to get the four players selected in rounds two through five signed, so some board strategy and communication with advisers regarding asking prices was needed Thursday. It led to a college-heavy, high-floor Day 2 with a bevy of arms. A lot of the high upside prep picks went unsigned. They probably had high asking prices and teams wouldn’t bite, they’ll go college. e.g. Kevin Parada, Chase Davis, Enrique Bradfield, Tanner Witt. Sounds like Martin’s asking price isn’t astronomical and the rd 3-5 picks will get under-slotted to some degree. Edited June 12, 2020 by BlueRocky
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Man, we have a deep, awesome, controllable infield. Just have to work on that OF. Gurriel, Martin, Betts is a pretty good OF.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Gurriel, Martin, Betts is a pretty good OF. I think it's fair to say that the Jays will make a play at Betts. Whether the offer would be considered acceptable is a different story, but assuming the rumours of a tabled offer to Gerrit Cole were true, then it's likely safe to assume that Betts would interest the front office as well, and they have the financial flexibility to make things interesting if they choose to. If that happens, the playoffs will be easy to make.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Gurriel, Martin, Betts is a pretty good OF. Yeah, teams are not going to spend any money this winter. Betts isn't getting $400m anymore. The Jays payroll is practically nothing. I don't expect Rogers to increase payroll or anything, but the Jays more than most teams should have the flexibility to fit a big contract in there, even if they have to buyout Anderson, non tender Shaw, etc. Sign Mookie, and then put future Mookie in CF. Outfield problem solved.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Pearson has, for all intents and purposes, graduated to the MLB, so calling Martin our #1 prospect isn't QUITE as crazy as it seems... This is a weird thing to say. Pearson wasn't making the team out of spring training and although it would seem likely he would now I feel like we're jumping the gun a little here. How many innings can he even get in a shortened season? He might not even be eligible to graduate from prospects lists.

Fair point, I was basing my statement on the fact that with the shortened season, he'd probably be "called up" to start it (the other option would be the Taxi squad, but I'm not sure that's the route to go with Pearson). But yeah, he might still maintain prospect status if the season is short enough...

And if they give him a full year of service time for a handful of games that's even more disappointing.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 That first tweet in particular is pure cringe. He shoved someone over, plan the parade.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Seems fitting that he was reading off a script to express his excitement while doing so in the most monotonous tone possible.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 That first tweet in particular is pure cringe. He shoved someone over, plan the parade. Yeah lol, I usually like to get myself hyped about a prospect by watching them perform on the field, not a clip of them being an *******.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Holy s*** why would the Orioles tweet out their "draft room" reactions. That is so cringe.
