Universal DH will happen in 2020 to avoid additional injury risk for pitchers.

 

Expanded playoffs seems like a no-go because the owners want it and the MLBPA wants to hold that over them for the next CBA drama, so unless something changes, looks like the regular playoff format in 2020. Whatever your feelings are on expanded playoffs, this was the year to do it since there will only be 37% of the regular season played. Missed opportunity for the league, but that's on the players.

 

Also the trade deadline is August 31. I think this deadline will resemble the waiver deadline of year's past where vets will be moved for practically nothing. I find it hard to believe any team would trade even a remotely decent prospect for 20-30 games of a player in a truncated season with no fans and no guarantee of the playoffs concluding. But I guess if the Jays fall out of it and want to get Julian Merryweather part II for Ken Giles, that's still a possibility.

Every team plays almost every day, games are longer and a baseball field is a lot bigger than a basketball court.

 

How would you squeeze in 3 games in a hub park with 6 different teams, coaches, batting practice etc.?

Only the actual games would need to be played in the main MLB appropriate park. I agree that it's highly questionable as to how well it would work though, especially if you try to give all teams equal time in the various game time slots.

Expanded playoffs for 2020 would’ve made the season very interesting. If we follow the old system, we’re targeting a 34 win season just to maybe sniff a wild card spot.

 

A team can get really hot and essentially run away with the division lead. The Dodgers were 60-29 by July 4th last year. Ironically they had a rough start too and were 8-8 by April 13.

I think MLB has it right here to not have hub cities if Florida and Arizona are off the table. Where else would have the appropriate infrastructure to host multiple teams? The Northeast region maybe but I see that creating more problems than solving. With an imbalanced schedule I don't see the issue anyways. Jays are facing nearly as many opponents over 60 games as the Raptors will be over 8. Chartered travel isn't that much of an issue.

An unfortunately timed injury to a relief pitcher who may have been traded for prospects otherwise is the worst thing to happen to a team ever. I don't know how anyone can ever get over this and I can totally understand why you're still suffering over this horrific event.

While technically the Jays may have an advantage as most of their roster hasn't had that long to experience Major League luxuries anyway it's still not major league worthy. Their medical room is a closet that has 1 bed. Not to mention the stadium is name for a competitor to one of the Jays sponsors (Schneiders). Buffalo cannot be in consideration

If it breaks down like this the Jays will play 47 of their 60 games against teams that finished 0.500 or better in 2019 and that project to finish over 0.500 in 2020.

Mediocre innings eaters have way less value in a 60 game season, and the Jays could easily plug in Pearson in one spot and Thornton (who at least has some upside) into the other to go with Ryu, Roark, and Shoe. The Jays are going to face almost all good offences in the 60 games except the O’s and Marlins. Need to worry about getting the best guys the most innings, and not about who can soak up 5 average innings at best.

It's going to be interesting seeing how they use both the depth starters and the bullpen generally. With no minor leagues and such a short MLB season a traditional use of a reliever would see them barely used (20 innings at the most?). Perhaps more bullpen days / openers will be used.

They still need rest. Overusing the bullpen is just going to lead to injuries either right away or down the road. Granted teams already don't really care about their non elite relievers but if in a contending position I would think they'd only up the usage in games down the stretch/into the playoffs.

Wow. I was a big supporter of starting Pearson in the rotation from the start, but having him miss one start and then getting an extra year of control out of it is a no brainer, and this coming from someone who thinks hoarding service time for pitchers is stupid due to their enormous injury risk. Go with Ryu-Shoemaker-Roark-Anderson-Thornton for the first five games, Ryu-Shoemaker for games 6 and 7, and then Pearson for 8. Done and done.

Tbf it's good that every game matters - one bad week could mess up a whole season. But yeah, not having expanded playoffs for this short season is a big mistake IMO.

The players rejected expanded playoffs and an extra 57 mil because they were worried the owners would have get almost triple that amount from TV revenues. Somewhere a wise man is thinking, you mean the owners would have more money to pay free agents next year? The players were just lead by a bunch of old stubborn pricks who already had their big free agent contracts. Bauer, Stro, Odorizzi, Paxton, betts and all the rest of the pending free agents must be a little bit pissed at this decision. Min salary guys could have potentially more than doubled their earnings if they made the playoffs. I'm sure they aren't happy either.
