I'm quite looking forward to a shortened season where nearly every game matters, instead of the usual slog where an individual game is irrelevant! Got to try to look at the positives right?

Yeah, I'm going to look past the optics nightmare that this whole thing has become, and just look at the positive. We'll have baseball back in some form, and a shortened season 1) is better than nothing, 2) should make each game mean more, and 3) will actually give the Jays a chance at a playoff spot if they have a hot start (that applies to every average team).

Either way, MLB and the MLBPA has beaten me down as a fan. Just start the season at whatever length and I'll take it. If I get to see a rotation with Ryu and Pearson in it right from the jump, plus all the young talent on the hitting side, I'll be happy.

Does anyone know what's they've done for golf?

Did they drop the 'purse' down significantly to account for the loss of spectators? Did golfers complain about this?

I'll admit - I have no idea how much impact the spectators have on the purse/revenue/profit.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/29315408/mlb-commissioner-rob-manfred-now-less-confident-2020-season

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred told ESPN on Monday he's "not confident" there will be a 2020 baseball season and that "as long as there's no dialogue" with the MLB Players Association, "that real risk is going to continue."

In a conversation with Mike Greenberg for ESPN's "The Return of Sports" special, Manfred walked back comments made to ESPN last week, when he said "unequivocally we are going to play Major League Baseball this year" and pegged the likelihood at "100%."

"I'm not confident. I think there's real risk; and as long as there's no dialogue, that real risk is gonna continue," Manfred said when asked if he was confident there would be a season.

MLB players reject latest offer, want schedule set

Manfred was asked about what the talks are doing for the optics of MLB while the country has been shut down by the coronavirus pandemic and only recently starting to reopen.

"It's just a disaster for our game, absolutely no question about it. It shouldn't be happening, and it's important that we find a way to get past it and get the game back on the field for the benefit of our fans," he said.

Manfred said the MLBPA's "decision to end good-faith negotiations" and the need for an agreement with the union on health-and-safety protocols "were really negative in terms of our efforts."

"The owners are a hundred percent committed to getting baseball back on the field," Manfred said. "Unfortunately, I can't tell you that I'm a hundred percent certain that's gonna happen."

On Saturday, a day after MLB delivered a return-to-play proposal that called for a 72-game season and guaranteed 70% of players' prorated salaries (with a maximum of 83%), MLBPA lead negotiator Bruce Meyer said in a letter to MLB deputy commissioner Dan Halem: "Given your continued insistence on hundreds of millions of dollars of additional pay reductions, we assume these negotiations are at an end."

MLBPA executive director Tony Clark followed with a statement asking the league to use its right from the sides' March 26 agreement to set a schedule, saying: "It unfortunately appears that further dialogue with the league would be futile. It's time to get back to work. Tell us when and where."

Manfred said he believes the union intended to file a grievance that the league had not fulfilled its obligation under the March 26 agreement to play the most games possible, which he deemed a "bad-faith tactic."

"I had been hopeful that once we got to common ground on the idea that we were gonna pay the players full prorated salary, that we would get some cooperation in terms of proceeding under the agreement that we negotiated with the MLBPA on March 26th," Manfred told ESPN. "Unfortunately, over the weekend, while Tony Clark was declaring his desire to get back to work, the union's top lawyer was out telling reporters, players and eventually getting back to owners that as soon as we issued a schedule - as they requested - they intended to file a grievance claiming they were entitled to an additional billion dollars. Obviously, that sort of bad-faith tactic makes it extremely difficult to move forward in these circumstances."

Manfred was one of six professional sports commissioners to be interviewed for the special, which will air Monday at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.

So, I assume everyone is still on the side of the owners here, right?

I am on the side of the fans, thus against both MLB sides. 2 spoiled sides that are so disconnected from the real world and even disconnected from their own minor leagues where most are losing their job instead of worrying about making 10 million instead of 12 for a players

Manfred is such a clown

so are the players and the so called super agent... Though i do agree about manfred as well

I'm on the side of shutting it down this year. Prepare for a full season next year. Both the players and owners can go f*** themselves.

You're spiking the football over Rob Manfred being a moron? Lol. It's on both sides to get it done.

Dude...go join some antifa protest or something to get your commie/anti-capitalist/anti-rich people urges out of your system. No one, NO ONE is on the side of the f***ing owners. When someone rightfully trashes the MLBPA for being stupid that doesn't mean they are simultaneously downing 3 inches of Ed Rogers cock. BOTH sides are wrong, s***** and stupid.

Definitely blame on both sides, the owners keep offering delicious s*** sandwiches, and the players refuse to eat those delicious s*** sandwiches, the ungrateful bastards.

There are people in this thread still saying both sides are responsible for this equally which really indicates a complete lack of literacy. There is responsibility on both sides but clearly the majority of fault here lies on the owners.

Getting the players to waive the ability to file a grievance is clearly a sign of negotiating in bad faith. Doing this s*** offer in order to delay the season so they can implement a fifty game season is the same. This is clearly on the owners.

Someone capable of not being a bootlicker would be able to see that fairly easily.

Well, there goes my plan to start a poll of "which team gets hit by an infection first?" once play resumed...

I've said all along that I thought players might be at less risk of contracting Covid in a controlled environment playing baseball with regular testing than being at home alone on their own going to grocery stores. It shouldn't come as a shock that some players have tested positive already.

A season shouldn't shut down the first time a player tests positive. That player goes on the DL and self isolates until he's virus free and can return.

The economic realities for smaller market clubs with crap TV deals are real. The big clubs with big TV deals are fine.

The Rockies TV deal brings in 40 to 50 mil. At 50 that's 14.5 for 48 games. 10 of that is eaten up by the draft. 15 is eaten up by player pension and benefits. Salary is 43.5 mil for 48 games. There's still executive pay, paying scouts, paying minor leaguers if they do the right thing, paying hotels, flights, meals, paying for testing for Covid. Let's call it 15 mil.

They will get some revenue from 50% revenue sharing and they get 30 mil from playoffs. However if a second wave hits and playoffs are a no go they are screwed.

2 things can solve the plight of the small market clubs. Players take less salary. Secondly, the owners 50% revenue sharing(which is just for this season) seemed like a massive step when I initially read it, but owners have to do more. Move revenue sharing to 75% or 100% just for this season for the good of the league.

A regular person isn’t allowed outside and must self quarantine until they test negative twice before returning to work. So a player testing positive will technically be out @4 weeks min depending on how severe their symptoms. It’s not just the players, but coaches, trainers, and stadium workers also at risk. It’s easy to see how this can get out of hand very quickly.

And, really, everyone they've been in contact with, not just people who test positive, should also be self-quarantining. I mean, 1 player gets it and visits the club house and the whole team will need to be shut down (unless they're just going to throw caution to the wind and say "f*** it".)

Hey, you can't use DL anymore... The Player is not disabled, (I am calling my union rep!) he is injured, IL!! Wait... He is not injured.. He has the Kung flu!! The Player is on the KFL for 14 days!!

Fine 2 to 4 weeks. These people are at risk at home. If the health risk is so dire, we are we going through the anguish. Just cancel the season. German soccer has been doing fine. I understand that they don't have the cases the US does, but the premier league is about to get going and the UK is worse than the US.

Why would people have to self quarantine if they have been tested and test negative? If a player tests positive and all other players, coaches and managers will go through testing and club houses will go through a deep clean. They aren't throwing caution to the wind. Players with pre-existing conditions will not play. The virus doesn't kill young healthy people.

Sure can. Just because it kills old people more easily does not mean those are the only people at risk.

These guys are popping pills from team docs like they're pez candies and we're worried about a virus that has a very effective treatment lol. There is no common sense in the world anymore honestly.

Can't wait to watch baseball on March 30, 2021!

While most critical cases have been elderly, there have been some younger people with severe cases. It just takes one player (or older team staff) and some bad luck and this becomes a PR disaster.
