EMK19 Verified Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Saw it coming... hopefully best case scenario it can be similar to 1995 (though due to totally different causes obviously) where we started again late April. If not I wonder how much longer the suspension can go on for before deciding to cancel it all for the year... hopefully it never gets to that point though.
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted March 12, 2020 Author Posted March 12, 2020 NHL just suspended the remainder of their season too early to predict anything on the playoffs.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 So, in the unlikely event that the whole season is cancelled, what happens with contracts, arb and option years, etc?

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 It's a shame about what happened with the NBA. Other leagues have no choice but to follow suit even if they don't think it is the best course of action.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 Did they say anything about the minors? Is that delayed too or has nothing officially been announced yet?

glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 Spring training is only half way through. If it's shutting down, it'll probably take a minimum of 3 weeks to a month to begin playing once they make that decision. Since things are likely to get worse over the next month or so, I can't see regular season games being played before June. Depends on when the league feels they can safely hold empty stadium games. I think that's the first domino here. Things are probably going to get worse in the next 30 days, but if it dies down in May then the league might try to work some empty stadium games before getting the green light to have fans in attendance. MLB is the one sports league that can't afford to push back the schedule so even if they start the season in June, they'll probably add multiple double headers into the schedule to make up for as many lost games as possible. The only other option would be to extend the season and then have the playoffs and World Series held in a neutral environment that either has warm weather and/or a closed roof. November/December baseball in a dome somewhere could probably work, though I have no idea how it would do in attendance or ratings since baseball is a regional sport. The NFL can have the playoffs anywhere and fans would come. Not sure how it would do in baseball, but they may not have a choice.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 As of today... 2 weeks are done in April.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 No chance it dies down in May, IMO. Going to be many months and most people in the world are going to get infected. The ones that don't are the ones that have started and will continue to practice social distancing, avoid touching their face, wash with soap and water several times a day. BTW, washing with soap and water is more effective as it removes the virus, hand sanitizer does not, and does not necessarily kill the virus.

We’re probably looking at June for the season to start.

I don't believe government predictions. The messaging is primarily to avoid panic. The true expectations are not for public consumption.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 China wants to start up it’s basketball season again. They are telling Jeremy Lin and others to get back there to start games. As absurd as that may sound, it seems like cases are decreasing in China and things are getting under control. But who knows what is true. This began seriously in January, and now they want to start up mid-March..
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 Given that the virus is very sensitive to heat and humidity, I would expect Florida to be one of their first places cleared to play. Of course politics and healthcare can alter the spread as much as it's biology, but it gives me hope that ST can get started quickly.

The initial spike in Wuhan province was pretty devastating, however.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 If it's not 100% chance, then it's damn close. The problem is that baseball can't extend the season into November/December without weather playing a huge part. The NBA can realistically suspend the season for two months and just end the playoffs in August once they resume, and it wouldn't make a difference for them. In baseball, if you start the season in June, and have to end it two months later to get all the games in, it will be a disaster. They would have to eat up the revenue loss by eliminating the scheduled games in April and possibly May (depending on how long this scare lasts) and then play a shortened season. That's why I can understand Manfred trying to prolong this as long as he can, but it will ultimately fail. Spring training games will probably be shut down soon, and Opening Day likely pushed back. How far back is the question. Between this and a potential lockout after 2021, our six years with Vlad/Bo/Biggio might seem a lot shorter. They could just play the games in the southern US, Puerto Rico or Mexico if they needed to extend anything as a last resort.
