Fangraphs has him at 4... But it's hilarious either way.

You're right. I was looking at baseball ref. His OPS+ is 7! 2 more years at 23 on that deal

Boston's starter ERA is 7.13 and will be even higher after tonight's game. When is the last time we saw a pitching staff this bad?

They're arguably not even the worst staff this year.

I'd have to think the O's staff last year was probably the worst in a long time. That might be challenged this year.

MLB about to neuter another one of its young stars. Bad enough Woodward complained about it, but Texas only hires 'PLAY DA GAME DA RITE WAY' guys to manage their teams apparently (Bannister was worse), so that's not all that surprising. The Padres manager supporting the unwritten rules instead of sticking up for his player is straight BS, though.

I've been watching baseball for like 25 years and had no idea it was forbidden to swing 3-0 with a big lead. Baseball needs more latinos to keep raging against the machine.

It's very bad behavior. Right up there with banging trash cans.

7 run lead, no swinging for the fences unless it's a pitcher's count.

That's a stupid old boys club rule that needs to go. Why is it the Padres fault that the Rangers are down 7-0? Blow the game up and maybe teach them a lesson on not sucking.

I'm generally not a fan of giving the green light 3-0, but to suggest that's somehow poor sportsmanship is just stupid.

The one I've commonly heard is don't steal a base late in the game with a huge lead. I guess I can understand that one, but now you can't swing either? Why not just have a mercy rule and end the game early then?

I'm so glad this BS is getting destroyed on Twitter. It's not even a MLB thing, it's two dimwit managers. Just saw that Tingler was part of the Rangers org prior to this season, which explains a lot. Stand up for your old employer rather than your superstar. He's not doing himself any favors there. The Rangers better not plunk Tatis for this.

I saw someone else post something brilliant:

If a team is winning by a large margin and that team's pitcher is throwing a no-hitter, why is it considered kosher for that pitcher to "keep trying" in the 8th and 9th innings? I can't imagine that being a batter on the team that is being no-hit is a good feeling, so if its say 7-0 in the 9th inning, should that pitcher not be deliberately laying off the batters to preserve their dignity?

They threw behind the next batter, lol. Warnings were issued, then completed the game.

Not surprised. Bannister is gone, but Rangers are still unlikable.

He actually had to apologize for being too good. This is why this league is dying.

First thing they showed this morning on MLB Central, Bill Ripken is standing in for DeRo... man I legit felt strangling him and crying for our game. Preller and both the manager s*** on their own player on live tv during the game, apparently he missed the take sign. They than make him apologize. Sickening.

Man, I was going to say that the Twitter reaction might actually be good for baseball since everyone is piling up on Woodward and Tingler and praising Tatis (even older players are sticking up for Tatis), but the apology brings that down. Tatis is one of the most exciting and charismatic players in the league. If Jayce f'n Tingler is going to zap that swag out of him at a young age, then yeah, that's not good for the sport.

Just had this conversation with a friend... Among the young (age 21/22) hitters club how would you rank these guys on their likely hitting performance over the next 10 years:

Acuna

Tatis Jr

Vlad Jr

Soto

Soto is a 21 year old Joey Votto. I think he's likely to be the best hitter and it might not be close, his hitting ability combined with his masterful command of the strikezone are already those of an all-time great. Can't sleep on his power either.

Tatis and Acuna both are prone to strikeouts, they're probably more likely to have some variance in their performance from "merely" good years to monster power seasons. I might give the edge to Tatis because he hits the s*** out of the ball, but I think these two will flip flop some years.

Vlad obviously has to make some adjustments to get on the level of these three, but he's definitely capable. He doesn't strikeout much and probably has a much better eye than we give him credit because we've only seen him pressing and swinging at uncharacteristic pitches. He probably has as much power if not more than all of these guys, and that's considering we've only seen him crush balls into the ground. Offensively IMO he has a ceiling possibly even higher than Tatis and Acuna, and lower than Soto who is a superhuman.

Tatis and Acuna are virtually tied for me, and I don't think either will ever reach Soto, who is a young Pujols.

Vlad is clearly 4th right now, but he could flip the switch at any time and reach the Acuna/Tatis level.

MLB players unanimously supporting Tatis. Won't post all the quotes, but list includes Eduardo Rodriguez, Howie Kendrick, Johnny Bench (!), Reggie Jackson, Amir Garrett, Colin McHugh, and probably a ton more that I haven't seen yet. I’m hoping Grichuk weighs in, just for my own amusement.

I guess if you want to look on the bright side, the Rangers are the laughing stock on Twitter today, and Tatis is getting a ton of shine. If Padres manager is smart he'll take back what he said last night and support Tatis when he's doing media sessions tonight.

This makes me so mad

Tatis should not be apologizing for anything

Davies got it right...

Padres pitcher Zach Davies, however, defended his teammate.

"You know, a lot of guys talk about unwritten rules in baseball. But, you're in the heat of the moment and you're going to try to get your pitch as a hitter and he didn't miss. So you can't really fault him for that, in my opinion," Davies said. "Make sure your 3-0 pitch is a little better."
