Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Who thinks Marcus Stroman manipulated his own service time? By that I mean, faked his injury so he could spend just enough time on the IL to roll over the 24 days of service time he needed to be a free agent. It's possible. My guess is he probably really did get hurt and then when he realized what he could do he milked it. Smart move.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Blue Jays were given a C+ to B grade on that trade across industry editorials and fans were flipping out. Simeon was one of the brightest teenage pitchers in A-ball and Anthony Kay was a backend top 100 prospect that got invited to the MLB futures game with Nate Pearson. I liked the deal at the time, I love it now.

Say what you will about Stroman, but that's a dude who wants to be on the diamond. Though, if he'd already decided to opt out of the season, it's possible.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 He'll still be a free agent this season actually. He accrued enough service time to become a free agent end of this season. Brodie Van Wagenen has given up Anthony Kay, Justin Dunn, Jerred Kelenic, and Simeon Woods-Richardson within a 1 year span. Yes, that’s what I meant

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Link is broke or something? Hah... the one works where I quoted you, morons... Laureano's going to get a hefty suspension, that's for sure. God those jerseys are so beautiful
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 I'm wondering how two teams comprised of players that do not have the virus can pass the virus to each other if that is the big concern Glen is talking about.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 I don’t like Stroman but I don’t think he faked an injury of manipulated anything. This could very well be about being cautious about making an injury worse ahead of free agency. But apparently he threw 5 innings in a sim game. So he was ready to go and made this decision. Seems to me if the injury was worse than it is he could have milked it and still got paid. The opt out means the Mets were planning to activate him and he either didn’t want to pitch or the Covid concerns are legit. I’m going with the latter.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Congrats Astros and A's, you all now have COVID-19 0+0=1

I kinda hope he contracts covid for the sheer irony factor.

Though, if he'd already decided to opt out of the season, it's possible. He wants to be on the diamond? All things considered, things have gone pretty smoothly with the covid stuff. Two teams had outbreaks. The outbreaks occured not from players playing each other, but from players going out to clubs and stuff against league rules. Now that teams are really cracking down, I don't think we will see another Marlins or Cardinals situation. Stroman decided to opt out AFTER all this. He's in zero danger. He obviously just doesn't want to play and is using Covid to cover his cowardly ass.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 I didnt like the Stroman deal at the time, but ill definitely eat crow on that. Looks like a really good deal for the Jays now

Teams do this all the time. Nate Pearson was just on the receiving end of it in fact. Kinda glad a player finally got to do it. Even better that it was against the Mets and not us after a big trade lol.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Dude??? Oh, sorry. I forgot that we are treating this like the Bubonic plague.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Teams manipulate service time = great. Players do it = bad. Yeah, don't feel bad for the Mets here.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 Clevinger is such a douche. Imagine playing with someone like that, wow. https://apnews.com/25af54042c96b70a8594d317f8cab76a

I don’t think most think that service time manipulation is great. People want to see the best players play regardless of service time. The problem is the CBA as it currently is invites the manipulation so teams can exert extra control over said players. Speaking for myself, I don’t see it as great - merely a necessary evil given the current rule set that I would gladly eradicate if I could.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 Teams manipulate service time = great. Players do it = bad. Yeah, don't feel bad for the Mets here. When a team does this it's in the best interest of the overall team, with one person in the organization being short changed. A player doing something like this only benefits one individual in the entire organization at the expense of everyone else. I'm not surprised in the slightest to see a prima donna like Stroman giving the middle finger to his teammates and organization at the instant he gains enough service time to become a free agent.
