Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 How much worse would Russell Martin even be!!?? 1.2 WAR in 249 PA last season. Sign Russ and promote Kirk. Option Jansen and game his service time. Frame McGuire for a second round of public masturbation and collect the insurance money. Atkins probably scared shitless that Montoyo would start playing Martin at 3B and batting him 3rd.

Jansen looked awesome in spring training this year. I had high hopes. The BB% is excellent this year. The BABIP is incredibly low. He probably is better than he's showing right now, but it is looking more like he won't be a lead average bat behind the dish. Kirk has 276 PA's in A+ ball and is 21 years old. I don't think it's reasonable to expect he can succeed in the majors. Jansen lit up all levels of the minors in 2017 and had a wRC+ of 146 in AAA in 2018 (360 PA's) and he can't hit at the ML level at age 25.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Realmuto would have signed an extension by now if he was going to do it. He's heading to free agency. We have 35 mil in payroll committed in 2022. Bo pre arb, Cavan pre arb, Pearson pre arb, Teoscar arb 2, Vlad Arb 1(super 2) Martin and Groshans will be pre arb. I feel like I see a pretty good fit with Realmuto..lol. I mean there will be a ton of teams that will be in on Realmuto, but we have the dollars and the talent to lure him potentially.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Good. Some irony there. 2 ex jays now with brewers who are off to awful starts. The entire Brewers lineup is off to a bad start. My god.

Kirk is evidently and demonstrably just a different kind of offensive prospect. His production + age + K/BB rates paint a special picture. Nobody should be shocked if he hits immediately in the big leagues. This is our Juan Soto. Our fat little Soto.

Kirk is 12 days younger than Soto - who's currently a top 3 (1?) hitter in baseball. Kirk's a fat catcher in A+ ball with an ISO of .159. By all accounts he has a special bat, but it's still highly probable he isn't ready to hit ML pitching yet.
King Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 I like how people point to Kirk's ISO in the FSL as being a red flag when the f***ing league average ISO in that league was... .109!! Hitters slugged .353. Kirks ISO is a positive. Not a negative!

Vlad's ISO in A+ ball was .161 and his career major league ISO is .168 in 659 PA's.

Our other fattie, who is actually younger than Kirk, has 150 mlb games, and is 4 degrees away from being Juan Soto, is more like our Juan Soto As much as we have a love hate relationship with him. Kirk is more like our... John Kruk?? Matt Stairs?? I don't know. Kind of like those guys except the advanced Sabermetrics will give him a good shot 5 years earlier

Laika was obviously joking about Kirk being comparable to Juan Soto. He is an exciting hitting prospect, but the comparison to the likely best hitter of the current generation was pretty clearly tongue in cheek.

In the old days fat people like Kruk and Stairs had to ride buses for 5 years... one level a year, sometimes one level every two years. If Kirk was born 30 years earlier he'd be able to sign a 1 year lease in Syracuse and renew it a couple of times. Now there are no minor leagues anymore so who knows what you do with these guys. Call 'im up and see what happens I guess.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Latest I heard about Kirk was he was still learning about how to effectively call a game and pitch sequencing. He's already on the taxi squad, so it's not out of the realm of possibility we could see him get some playing time this season. In the off season the reports I read about him said that his bat is MLB ready, but everything else needs works. But like others, I would love to call him up just for the entertainment factor. When Jansen or Reeese arte up to bat I usually just FF to the next batter. I always watch the live action a little behind live so I can do this. The catchers we have are like auto outs in slowpitch when only nine players show up. They are awful.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Kirk is comparable to Pudge. That's not bad, folks.

Laika was obviously joking about Kirk being comparable to Juan Soto. Who else has put up a .400+ on base percentage as a Blue Jays minor leaguer?? Since we don't know what happens this year in the minor leagues there is way more variance than usual. Kirk has a .420 minor league on base percentage. Was this the year he came down earth?? The on base percentage dipped and the power didn't come. Or was this the year he spent 3 weeks in double a, and 2 weeks in triple a with a .450 on base percentage and Biggio like power development?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Did no one else think this was just a joke? Right - I'm dumn. Please everyone, point and laugh at me. I still think it's a stretch to think he'd be able to hit at the ML level right now (the non-joking part of his post).

I still think it's a stretch to think he'd be able to hit at the ML level right now (the non-joking part of his post). It's a stretch to say he could of jumped from Dunnedin to MLB September 3rd 2019 and hit. Any number of guys have come up and hit well after leaving the Florida State League, tearing up double a and triple a, and getting called up September of next year. How do we deal with these guys?? Maybe between Spring Training I, Spring Training II, and the Rochester Training goup he's had 250 at bats against somewhat advanced pitchers and 150 against pitching machines, and he is ready for the big time?? We just don't know.

A box of cracker jacks were a nickel! Baseball has had a few players defy the body prototype over the years. Gwynn was tubby later in his career. Kirby Puckett was basically a fire hydrant. Lets hope our plunky dwarf Mexicano fits that mould. Im not quite sure how Tabby will describe him but im positive it will be as lame and creepy as usual.

"I know the team is very high on this young man. Kirk has a very THICK and STROOONG lower half and a SOLID base that allows him to tap into some power. But he's also got very QUICK hands and good bat control. He's got a chance to be a special player."
