Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Do people really believe that God is answering their prayers when their loved one gets better under the direct supervision of a Doctor?
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Do people really believe that God is answering their prayers when their loved one gets better under the direct supervision of a Doctor? Better question, is it really worth whining about if it helps them cope with the situation?
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Some interesting news: Given all the recent graduates from the minors, this makes sense. Gotta work on that launch angle.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Better question, is it really worth whining about if it helps them cope with the situation? Meh - I'm not whining - just curious. I often think God gets more credit than the doctors and nurses.

I find it puzzling that people are so quick to give credit to some deity when physical conditions improve, but then not assign any blame to this same deity for causing the causing/allowing this physical condition to exist in the first place.

Well, there is no God in a literal sense. Negativity towards a non-existent God (literal sense) has no real function in most instances but to frustrate and harm the human directing the negativity. Positivity towards a non-existent God (literal sense) does arguably have a function. The reason people believe in things is deeply rooted in our nature, evolution (both biological and social) and human history. Alignment with archetypal sources of order, or a platonic good, or whatever you want to call it tends to make humans better and more functional (zealots and extremists aside). There's ancient wisdom in religious stories and traditions that modern people practicing middle-school skepticism are too quick to abandon. In a circular way this makes the concept of God "true". Let us pray

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Shouldn't we have had like 50 MiLB signings by now? This off season has seemed very slow for the Jays in that regard.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Shouldn't we have had like 50 MiLB signings by now? This off season has seemed very slow for the Jays in that regard. They'll surely announce a bunch of them all at once in the next week or two like they always do.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 I don't understand how projections are saying Biggio is going to be a worse player in 2020 than he was in his 2019.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I don't understand how projections are saying Biggio is going to be a worse player in 2020 than he was in his 2019. Biggest difference I see in the projections is that Biggio is projected to lose most of his value on the bases. Sure he won't necessarily be a perfect 14/14 stealing bases again, but the guy is a phenomenally intelligent base runner.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I don't understand how projections are saying Biggio is going to be a worse player in 2020 than he was in his 2019. Along with what max silver said, Biggio was also a rookie who was a tad older than your usual top guys. The projections simply see him regressing to the mean, it's not common for rookies to post such an excellent walk rate as he did while striking out higher than in the minors with good power. Projections tend to be conservative, so they regress Biggio to be closer to the average second year 25 year old player with similar hitting profiles, while also not expecting him to be an elite baserunner. On the other hand, Vladdy who torched the minors but was disappointing in the majors is expected to regress to his mean, which is a 21 year old hitting force to be reckoned with. It should be noted, Statcast and UZR vs. DRS see a vastly different defender. UZR and DRS thought Biggio was average to below average, while Statcast rated him as a near elite defender, 92nd percentile in the league. It's very likely if our internal evaluations follow a model closer to Statcast's, which I would assume is the case, that the team likely valued Cavan as closer to a 3-4 win player last season and would likely project him to be in that range as well, with some regression factored in.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 Kendrys Morales is retiring We retiring his number at the home opener?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 We retiring his number at the home opener? A little early for that. A couple of years from now.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 A little early for that. A couple of years from now. Never too early for bobblehead day. Oh man imagine the materials and production costs on that thing. The 3D printer will malfunction.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 lol @ his calves, this guy's a tank.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I do not remember this guy being on the jays, let alone throwing 40 relief innings.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 lol @ his calves, this guy's a tank. Tank isn't the first word that comes to mind for me when watching a video of someone whose body jiggles so much
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 We also signed RP Brian Moran. His minor league numbers and projections aren't bad. Could be decent.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 We also signed RP Brian Moran. His minor league numbers and projections aren't bad. Could be decent. He's a sidearmer who throws like 85, I wouldn't get too excited about him lol. His most exciting attribute is being the brother of Colin Moran, who is also not very good on a second look.

Having someone who's a pure lefty specialist isn't the worst idea in the world.
