and when they ask for an asset back???

Geez, pick 1-2 garbage prospects. Not all of our prospects are golden.

I'd want Price (pay full price) and someone that we really, really like on the roster or on the farm. For 1-2 garbage prospects.

You thought that I wanted Price at fill salary for Vlad or something? I value Price at $15M a year. The rest of his salary should be covered with prospect or player capital.

Yeah, 4/80 is what I thought would get him. I'd be surprised if anyone offered more, but who knows with this market.

I'd say 5-year, $110M gets it done for TO. 4/80 anywhere else.

4/84 + an option year. Jeez we don't have to overbid by 30 million.

5 and 90 for me. Front load it. Those last 2 years could average 12.5 mil per season.

We can so nicely afford to front load a sizeable contract now with declining salaries planned for when we finally have to start paying our in house developped guys. Payroll is so low right now.

Also Ryu has no draft pick compensation cause they qualified him last year

Problem is the Angels, White Sox and Twins are also in severe need of SP. Someone will end up with nothing.

I doubt we frontload any contracts. First off, no one ever really does that because of inflation and the fact that contracts can be moved. Vernon Wells is definitely an outlier but it's a great example.

Also, I think the current thinking is that the labor deal will expire soon and the next one will have higher salaries for the players anyway. So 20 million in 4 years isn't going to be as big of a deal as frontloading a deal to 30 mil in year 1 is now.

I don't think the team would prefer a frontloaded contract, but Ryu certainly would and the team is in a position to make that concession if it helps give them an edge.

Its simple enough to estimate present value of contract offers, whatever the terms. Front loading doesn't happen often because teams generally do not have the budget room. Jays are in an uncommon situation with significant budget surplus.

What other options are there? Keuchel? Trade? Or just sign a band aid like Teheran?

lol... any of the above at worst.

I think if we strike out on Ryu and Keuchel then any sort of rotation upgrade will come via trade.

Anyone else feel that the Jays will have used at least 18 pitchers by June 1st. They have 22 on the 40 man with really only Elvis not knocking on the door. Only 6 don't have options. The Buffalo express

Lol ok guys, whatever you say. Can't wait for this frontloaded Ryu deal.

I don't think anyone actually expects the team to structure a contract that way. It's just something they could do if they were actually interested in signing him.

fully expect this

hard to attract players to a 95 loss team in a less desirable playing location

Jays don't really have the surplus assets to trade for pitching either, catching position excluded

i dont expect any noteworthy acquisitions will occur

I'm listening to Shapiro on Tim and Sid, he's so well spoken.

He is the epitome of corporate speak/being a politician... but like a politician, lot's of BS and no action/results.

They don't even have a surplus of catching. Jansen and McGuire project as a decent starter and good backup, and nobody else is close.

I'm taking into account the prospects

You can always dumpster dive for a backup C

I'd agree it's no surplus, but I'd still be into exploring the possibility of "selling high" on McGuire as an asset while bringing in a veteran back up catcher.

Not that I'm advocating going down this road, but it seems as though the receiver of choice for Ryu with the Dodgers was none other than Russell Martin. https://dodgers.mlblogs.com/notebook-the-ryu-martin-connection-continues-turner-update-6d1d1673d4c8

Band aid. If the Jays are going to use up payroll space over a 3-4 year period, then it should be for a player they really like, not someone like Keuchel who is likely a stopgap himself and not a difference maker. Another option would be to trade for someone who another team wants to move for salary reasons and doesn't take much to acquire.

Don't think he fits the criteria you listed, but I'd sure love for us to trade for Jon Gray.

Not sure why the dislike for Keuchel on this board. Last year, in a half season, he started 19 times, and 11 of those 19 starts he gave up either 0, 1 or 2 earned runs.

If that would not make a difference on the Jays rotation I don't what would. Keuchel just goes out there year after year and gets the job done.
