Maico450 Verified Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 There is No Question that the Jays have the financial ability to do anything they want to do. Its a matter of WHAT they WANT to do? What they don't want to do is cripple future payroll ability by handing out stupid contacts, that could impact the ability to field a good team in the future. Right today, the jays could afford to pay Cole and Strasburg a combined salary of 80 million for next year. But what about 4 years from now, when you have our core entering arbitration years and collecting big salaries? I would be happy if we got Keuchel for 4/70 and Teheran for 3/30.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Would a Ken Giles for Dustin May trade make sense for both teams? Especially if the Dodgers sign a top FA pitcher, could be fair value. It would take more than Giles to get May. Dustin May has too much upside as a SP to trade even for 1 year of a top reliever. Including Eric Pardinho in with Giles would I'm sure get the Dodgers attention? In any case its going to take more than Giles.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 It's awesome. Jays should take on Pujols contract with a real nice sweetener so the Angels can go get Cole. I was thinking more of signing a player similar to max scherzer. I'm not sure your idea will help the Jays.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 It's awesome. Jays should take on Pujols contract with a real nice sweetener so the Angels can go get Cole. That's a fun hypothetical. Pujols' contract only has two years left but he does have that 10 year "personal services" thing tacked on the end of it and who knows how a trade would affect that. But I imagine that the Angels would basically have to give up Jo Adell to make the value even out.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 If they had any intention they wouldn't cap themselves at around the $100m figure as the elite guys are at least double that. $100m will get you very good, but not what it'll take to get the best of the best done. The writing is on the wall... You just need to not be afraid to read it. He said they have the flexibility to pay a 100M to free agents this year? The writing is in the tweet, read it. Yep. I think you're reading it wrong Krylian.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 I had a dream that Josh Lindblom came over for dinner and we talked about his spin rate over spaghetti and meatballs. Can't get this guy out of my head!

Ray Verified Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 I'd be quite content with adding Ryu and Josh Lindblom. Give me all the former KBO stars.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Imagine if the Bluejays suddenly became owned by a billionaire that just wanted a winning team for fun, and promised to make it the top spending team. RedSox are currently projected to spend 227M by Frangraphs, while the Bluejays currently sit at 69M projected. Giving them 158M to raise their payroll by. That's Cole at 8/256 for 32AAV, Strasburg 8/180 for 30AAV, Rendon 7/235 for 33.5, Ryu 3/54 for 18AAV, Ozuna 3/45 for 15AAV, Gardner 1/10 for 10AAV, Lindblom 2/8 for 4AAV. That leaves us with 16M to spend on a bullpen. Rotation: Cole, Strasburg, Ryu, Lindbloom, Anderson/Pearson/Thornton SS Bichette 3B Rendon 1B Vlad LF Ozuna 2B Biggio CF Gardner DH Hernandez RF Grichuk C Jansen Announce all the signings in one day. Watch the baseball world explode in confusion. Does it put us ahead of the Yankees?

Ray Verified Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 If I were Atkins, I'd be calling the Mets right now to offer salary relief in return for Dom Smith. Dom Smith + Jed Lowrie for Richard Urena.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Ross Atkins: “There’s not a free agent pitcher that we haven’t touched base with” Atkins checking in on 1st and 2nd tier free agent pitchers:
Amok Verified Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 (edited) If I were Atkins, I'd be calling the Mets right now to offer salary relief in return for Dom Smith. Dom Smith + Jed Lowrie for Richard Urena. Yeah I saw Ken Rosenthal report this and said yes to myself right away. But taking on salary will lower the cost it will not make it free. You are still talking a prospect or two going in the deal. Edited December 5, 2019 by Amok

Kirk and Moreno make him a little redundant. If he nets you your 1B if the future, that’s a W.

If he nets you your 1B if the future, that’s a W. Plus he is a LHB. He kinda reminds me of Fisher, not in the type of player he is but the career direction so far. Both Fisher and Smith had good minor league careers and both were former top 100 prospects. (Fisher had better hitting numbers) Smith had two season of about 350AB total where he did nothing in the majors and Fisher had about 400AB over 3 seasons. (Smith also had a bad year last year in the minors while Fisher didn't) Smith was breaking out big time before he went on the 60DL. There is a great fangraph article about him, his Ks and Walks were terrible in his first two seasons. Last season they basically improve to the point were they are closer to his minor league numbers. It just 200AB season but I want Smith as the Jays new 1B. There are some interesting free agent options but they are mostly just placeholders, Smith could solve the hole for years.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Would anyone be interested in signing Eric Thames to play 1B and backup OF? That's a hard no.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 f*** off everyone else!!! Uh-oh... Angels in on him.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 That's a hard no. I remember him being comically bad in the OF back when he was young and a lot skinnier. I can only imagine what he looks like out there now.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 Would anyone be interested in signing Eric Thames to play 1B and backup OF? I'd prefer it if we tried to convert Hernandez to play the same role.
