Laika Community Moderator Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 I've watched extensive video of Josh Lindblom all morning long, expertly analyzing his mechanics and repertoire, and I am convinced without any shred of doubt that he is an above average MLB SP, closer to Miles Mikolas than Merrill Kelly. I would bet my life, family, career, and reputation on this. If Toronto does not sign Josh Lindblom I will stop posting on this board and retire from my baseball career, unless he somehow gets an AAV of $10M or more from some other team then it's all good because I was right and they just got outbid by some other team that was hot as f*** for him.

What are you going to do with your DDL team when the Yankees sign him to a $7M per/yr contract?

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Music to my ears! Drury, Fisher, McKinney, Tellez, Hernandez, and even Grichuk should all be on their last chance. If any have a bad season they should be replaced - it’s not acceptable to have a quarter of the roster at replacement level but kept just in case they take a big leap forward.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 I tend to agree that Grichuk would probably be a non-tender candidate normally but his job is pretty safe after getting a 5 year extension.

I don’t think it should be. He’s one bad season away from his contract going from unnecessary to a mistake, and we shouldn’t be rostering a replacement player just because he has long term contract, especially with our payroll flexibility. TBF he only needs to revert to a 2 WAR player to justify keeping him, which is still possible.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 I see what you are saying but it's hard to eat ~40 mil a year. I think at bare minimum he can at least be a 4th OF.
Todd Verified Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 As usually the blue jays on sitting on they asses doing nothing. Saying the same crap like the list three years. We are talking to this guy and this guy but no activity. NOT improving this up and coming team.

Well Grichuk's deal goes down to $9m a year for 3 years from next season (i.e. 2021) which in total is just over half what we paid Tulo to go away (and he'll only have $4m left from 2021). Different situation of course, but still frustrating if we are forced to keep him around if he continues to suck.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 4, 2019 Author Posted December 4, 2019 I just looked up Grichuk's xwOBA thinking he probably under-performed it, but he actually beat it by a hair. His DRS was also 10 runs worse than his UZR. He probably wasn't even as good as his 0.5 fWAR

It may be December 4th but the stove is red hot. Everyone is getting more money than projected and I'm legitimately concerned this FO won't have what it takes to pull the trigger and overpay for a legit FA. Shatkins has done a great job with the rebuild, but it's time to start winning. Give Cole or Strasburg the biggest contract ever for a pitcher and let's turn the page on this rebuild

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Ross Atkins: “There’s not a free agent pitcher that we haven’t touched base with”
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2019 Author Posted December 5, 2019 They're saying the right things. Now Ross has to put his big boy pants on and get a deal done.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 They're saying the right things. Now Ross has to put his big boy pants on and get a deal done. That would mean overpaying for a guy.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 That would mean overpaying for a guy. As long as it's the right guy.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2019 Author Posted December 5, 2019 That would mean overpaying for a guy. Free agents almost always go to the highest bidder. I don't think many people will care about being a bid high on the $/WAR projections or whatever if the player is a good fit.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Wheeler apparently had a higher offer from the White Sox but went with Philly because of location. The Jays are not an ideal location for players, and it’s a bad team in the AL East. Atkins is going to have to give out a contract that he will feel uncomfortable with and exceeds the value the club has placed on that specific player. He might do that on a short term deal, but remains to be seen if he’s willing to tack on an extra year or so to get a player that may be diminishing returns by the backend of the contract. If you look at the big free agents the Jays have signed in the last 15 years, almost all of them were dead money by the last year or two of their deals except Burnett who opted out after 3 years. Ryan, Thomas, Martin, Morales. I don’t think shatkins wants to sign that type of deal.

The really big question is will they be willing to spend when we are ready to compete, and we're a more attractive destination. I think they will, but we'll have to see.
