Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 I'm in category 1. Heck months ago I was posting the Jays should pursue top free agents this offseason and was getting pushback from those that are saying that now. Yes Jim, you are always ahead of the curve. Thanks for reminding us of that. What's that thing that Trump always does? Oh yeah, demand credit for every little thing he does or says correctly.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 Dick - you're the best and the worst all wrapped up in a little ball.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 I think the BJMB crowd can be lumped in two categories: 1. The optimists. Those who have faith and a reasonable expectation that the FO can identify the problem areas and come up with solutions to fill those problem areas given the relatively good situation they are in (tons of payroll space, premium positions already filled with young, cheap and productive players, a reasonably strong farm system, a hands-off owner that has allowed for a top-tier payroll in the recent past and a large baseball market). This includes free agency and trades. 2. The pessimists aka the Krylian crowd. The ones who think that members of management will be so meek, "risk averse" and incompetent at their jobs that there is no chance they will sign any desperately needed pitching so that the team wastes another year of half of the offense earning minimum wage. Oh and Toronto is clearly worse than Kansas City, Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore and Pittsburgh combined. Baseball players would rather hang themselves than dare cross the border and play in front of the third largest city in North America. They might be paid in pesos and might even be forced to learn French. That's much worse than having to worry about their kids being shot at school basically at any time. no realists?

Expect the fo understands this and will build the jays into a contender/ws winner through a multi-year process. 3. The pessimists aka the krylian crowd. Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 Those f'ing pricks are clearly biased and need to take an EQ course Jim I said I was sorry
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 no realists? Other than key22's post about signing every pitcher of note, who hasn't been a realist out of group one? I have seen no one saying the Jays are 100% getting Cole and yet I repeatedly see others posting about how the Jays aren't getting Cole. We don't need to be reminded that the Jays have a 97% chance of not getting a certain player just like EVERY team has a 97% of not getting any one player.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 Here's some offseason roster talk to get this thread back on track. Let's say Teoscar, Gurriel, Grichuk and Fisher are all on the 25-man next year. None of them can play an acceptable CF full-time can they? But if we do acquire a CF that would mean carrying 5 OFers which makes no sense for an AL team that sometimes had a 2 man bench last year lol. So either one of the previously mentioned 4 would need to be traded or optioned or something but I don't see why we would do that. I suppose one could DH too. But what about Gurriel playing 1B and becoming a corner OF/1B? Leaving the DH spot open and having Gurriel play some significant time at 1B could help the logjam a little bit. Is that a good idea?

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 I quit paying attention toward the end of the year. As of now it looks like Urena or maybe Valera could be the UT guy next year? What's up with Valera? Can he play SS? Is he a viable Ut guy? Bat looks ok enough if the D is there.

Might be a waste of Gurriel's value? Teoscar and Grichuk can play a borderline passable CF, and I don't think the book is closed on Alford. If Alford continues his 2019 2nd half play at Buffalo, bring him up give him a chance. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Heck, Alford could be better than any FA vet brought in to man CF.

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 4, 2019 Author Posted October 4, 2019 Non-tender deadline should be interesting this year. Boshers, Law, Travis and Maile should all be punted. Regarding Valera, he has no options left. I don't really see how he's of any value to the team.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 I can't definitively say whether Urena does anything better than Valera. Valera hit way better in AAA and went through whatever witchcraft program the Yankees implement for their hitters. All of a sudden he hits everything in the air and has maintained his elite discipline and contact rate. I would much rather roster Valera. I agree, Urena is trash. Just not sure if Valera can even play SS though. Valera's bat is mildly intriguing. Steamer had him projected for a wRC+ of 88 entering the year. After a solid 2019 his 2020 projections could be ok. Could be some sort of Yankee magic there as well as you mentioned. But like BTS said he doesn't have options so he's very fringe. If he can play SS though he might be worth giving a shot if we want to pinch pennies because if he can't do it we'd prob have to look outside the org.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 Non-tender deadline should be interesting this year. Boshers, Law, Travis and Maile should all be punted. Agreed. I'd non-tender Drury too who is looking at a raise on top of his $1.3M. Are there any close calls?
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 4, 2019 Author Posted October 4, 2019 Agreed. I'd non-tender Drury too. Are there any close calls? I'd also non-tender Drury, but I don't think there's any chance the team will. I bet they'll have a long look at whether or not to keep Tepera. He'll be 32, is coming off a lost season, and will make ~2M in arb. It's not hard to find equally intriguing relievers for 2M.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 Looking into this some more and Fangraphs gives Valera a 50 grade for defense at SS. I'd obviously prefer someone better but he could be an option for the UT role if that grade is accurate.

Why do you think he's a lock just curious? He's had over 1500 ABs of replacement level production and is 27 years old. Hell, he's trending in the wrong direction even.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 I don't even think Urena is a decent defensive SS. He's worse than useless. Valera could make the team as the backup MIF. Bench might be Reese, Valera, and two from the glut of s***** outfielders McKinney/Alford/Teo/Fisher/Davis/Drury if he is tendered.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 Signing Hech as the backup MIF could work out well. Alternatively, you could probably bring Sogard back. He seemed to like it here. Actually, even Asdrubal could be interesting in a super utility role. Giving each of the kids a DH day a week wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 4, 2019 Author Posted October 4, 2019 Yeah, you guys might be right. Maybe the team has seen enough of Drury.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 Yeah, you guys might be right. Maybe the team has seen enough of Drury. His wRC+ shocks me every time I check his page. I expect to see like, 85 or something and it was f***ing 66. Nearly the worst hitter in baseball that received 400+ PA. And he's a negative baserunner and defender for his career. seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 Yeah, you guys might be right. Maybe the team has seen enough of Drury. Wouldn't surprise me if they kept him though, they've given him a long leash so far. Could probably avoid arb with him and sign him for peanuts.

I knew he had been very bad, but I didn't realize quite how bad. Not really justifiable to give him a guaranteed 2M or whatever he'd make in arb.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 There isn't a chance in hell this team trades for David Price. This FO is extremely risk averse. I think they play it safe and try to conservatively fill about half of our identified holes (a mid tier starting pitcher will be the highlight) this offseason while still giving anyone interesting a lot of playing time. Then they'll add again, and perhaps more aggressively, after the 2020 season. Any talk about the Gerrit Cole's of FA is extremely wishful thinking. They'd trade for David Price if they thought they'd get something else worth 90 million.. I think they've been hinting they could take on Salary if they got "paid" with other good players... even the salaried player wasn't worth it.
