Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2019 Posted September 18, 2019 I didn't say that I knew anything. This tired old argument that we don't know what the offers are and therefore can't speculate is ridiculous. We can compare with previous trades and make some educated guesses. For example, we know that trading an MVP calibre player returning from an injury still usually nets a solid return. We got nothing and he was very good for Cleveland. We know that pitchers with less value than Stroman have received much more highly rated prospects and more of them. I like the guys we got but those are just the facts. They didn't like the personality of either and were eager to get rid of both. That's why they were never offered extensions despite being very clear that they wanted to stay. Same with EE. Anyways, I wasn't even intending to trash Shapiro with my comments. I like that he doesn't care what fans think when it comes to trades. Now that he's cleaned house we can get to the business of building a contender. Grant - please provide examples of MVP calibre players returning from injuries who were traded for solid returns. As BTS points out - good luck. Also, please point me to the pitchers with lesser value than Stro who were traded for a better package than SWR + Kay. Are you going to say Puig, Reyes and Logan Allen? JBB, Beer and Martin?
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2019 Posted September 18, 2019 Thoughts on Tellez so far? I think I've seen enough to know for sure he shouldn't be given the starting 1B job next season and not even sure he deserves a 40 man roster spot.

I think I've seen enough to know for sure he shouldn't be given the starting 1B job next season and not even sure he deserves a 40 man roster spot. I think he has failed his audition with poopy brown colours. I'm actually surprised they continue to give him playing time over Smoak and certain other players. He's not even improving, which may allow a s***** narrative like "he's figuring it out at the MLB level" (he has a .666 OPS in the second half and hasn't taken a f***ing walk in September). This is my one current complaint with the FO and coaches. Rowdy Tellez has nothing going on and he should be sent overseas. It's insulting to Justin Smoak, a solid veteran, to be taking a seat every couple of days for this guy. f***, I'd rather give Anthony Alford playing time. At least Alford can run and has some obvious defensive/speed upside. I don't see any light at the end of Rowdy's disgusting tunnel.

Move Vlad to 1B and take Tellez off the 40 man roster. Fixes two issues in one shot.

I like this but then we probably just get Drury at 3B for 2020. I want to see significant improvement to the roster this offseason not just moving s*** pieces from one spot to another.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 Who are some SP's the Jays might target this offseason? Either via trade of FA? Kyle Gibson, Zack Wheeler, Rick Porcello, Alex Wood, Homer Bailey, Wade Miley, Drew Smyly, Jake Odorizzi, Tanner Roark as free agents. Honestly signing two of those guys shouldn’t be a stretch. As for trades I don’t really know haven’t given it much thought.

TheOutsider Verified Member Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 These days, I like to look at xWOBA against for pitchers, to see if they've been lucky and/or helped/hurt by a great defense behind them. MLB average for pitchers is .318 Available - xWOBA 2019 (2018) ---National League--- Hamels - .333 (.339) Hill - .271* (.307) Wheeler - .303 (.278) Wood - .370* (.293) Roark - .336 (.318) Keuchel - .325 (.295) ---American League--- Odorizzi - .299 (.338) Miley - .297 (.307*) Gibson - .330 (.316) Porcello - .337 (.311) Bailey - .320 (.366) --Trash Heap--- Smyly - .368 (n/a) ---Blue Jays--- Thornton - .332 (n/a) Shoemaker - .334* (2017: .352) Waguespack - .351 (n/a) * = small sample, don't trust these numbers It won't take much for the available pitchers to be an upgrade to what we've got (am hoping for good seasons from Thornton, Kay and Shoemaker, and I'm assuming Zeuch and Wag suck). I think the smart money would be on betting on Odorizzi (rise in FB velo) and/or Miley (now throws mostly cutters) as they'll be relatively cheap. I'd like the Jays to spend on Wheeler, but have no faith they'll take the risk. Let alone going after Ryu, or even Cole.

Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted September 30, 2019 Posted September 30, 2019 except he can pass through waivers easily because no team will claim him No chance Alford will be the one going through waivers and being claimed
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2019 Posted September 30, 2019 Between Alford and Fisher, I think both would get claimed (there are way too many tanking teams), but if I had to choose one who would get claimed, it would be Alford. He can actually play D and was a top prospect two years ago. A bad team would claim him and park him in CF all season. Fisher is more debatable since he looks like a DH/LF who (so far) can't hit.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted September 30, 2019 Posted September 30, 2019 If Fisher performs in ST, then he should be on the team. If he sucks, he should be waived. No idea why Fisher should get special treatment.

Rebuilding/tanking teams would claim both 100% most likely. It's a free prospect with 5+ years of control left with previous prospect hype. Ironically, the Jays might have been able to get Fisher without giving up Stevenson had they waited until the winter. I know Stevenson may not be much, but still potential asset moved for a piece that was probably going to be DFA'd by the Astros.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 holy f***. I liked this post because I'm legit baffled at what point you could have possibly disagreed with, much less felt the need to write "holy f***" in response to it. Spanky liking it put it over the top. Great post. 1. Rebuilding teams will claim Alford/Fisher because those teams usually suck and it's getting a former top prospect for nothing. 2. Fisher was likely to be DFA by the Astros if they kept him past the deadline. 3. Stevenson isn't much of a prospect but still a piece the Jays moved for a guy they might have gotten for free (or much less) in the winter. I'm guessing my backhanded praise of Stevenson is what you are angry about, lord knows you'd swing from his nuts if he was a Jay, but if you consider that hyping him up, I don't know what else to say. If you think points #1 and 2 are wrong, then I can't help you. If you think Fisher was going to be traded by the Astros in the winter for something even resembling a prospect, then again, I can't help you. What do you think Alford would fetch in a trade right now?
