5 mph drop in velocity this year. He's either injured or his arm is toast.

Can't hurt to see what he has though.

Hes got a 6 week audition as a starter and see if you can fix him. If not non tender. I liked him in the past... obviously great name but his stuff fell of a cliff and so did he. I don’t know if he’s injured or mechanics.

If his arm is injured, send him for TJS and then let's rock and roll!

Where are you getting that from?

Fangraphs says:

Under 'Pitch Info Pitch Velocity'

Cutter - 90 MPH in 2017 to 88.6 MPH this year (thrown 14% of the time)

Sinker - 91.9 MPH to 90.0 MPH (thrown 34.2% of the time)

Curveball - 83.4 MPH to 81.8 MPH (thrown 45.5% of the time)

Under 'Pitch Type'

Fastball - 91.9 MPH to 89.9 MPH (89.9 MPH in 2018) - thrown 34%

Cutter - 89.9 MPH to 88.5 MPH (88.9 MPH in 2018) - thrown 15%

Curveball - 83.4 MPH to 81.8 MPH (81.5 MPH in 2019) - thrown 45%

Based on that, we're looking at about 2 MPH drop from 2017, but little to no change from last year.

Based on the pitch values - the effectiveness of his curve ball has really dropped off.

But seriously guys...this guy was as good as '2016 Sanchez' in 2017 and was still a quality starter in 2018. It's too bad the media and some fans won't recognize this at all and praise Atkins for such a shrewd move.

5 mph drop in velo thats alot

He doesn't throw a 4-seamer. You're comparing a small handful of pitches in 2016 to a small handful of pitches in 2019. His sinker is about where it was last year, and 2mph less than where he was in his breakout 2017.

This is a good claim. Three years of team control after this season, and he's been a league average starter as recently as 2017 and 2018. Dude has an absolute wipeout curveball when he's on, and that could make him a weapon out of the pen even if he doesn't find it again as a starter.

It's not a 5 mph drop, because he rarely throws 4-seam fastballs (maybe he should!) very few of his pitches have been classified as such, and it's entirely possible a bad cutter just happened to end up registering at 87 or something. His actual velo drop is ~92 in 2017 down to 90 in 2018 and 2019 with the sinker, and 90 in 2017 down to 89 in 2018 and slightly below that this year on his cutter. So we're looking at more of a ~2 mph drop, which is still significant but unchanged from last season where he had success.

He had a few pitches classified as 4-seam fastball in 2016 and 2019, with a difference in average velocity of 5 mph. They're not looking at the pitch frequencies.

I mean if you're trying to cause chaos, at least quote his 2015 4 seam velocity (93.1 MPH) and compare it to 2019 (87 MPH) and call it a 6.1 MPH drop!

Sinker/Curve guys never made sense to me. The two pitches don't tunnel. It's like Sanchez where you can just see the sinker right out of the hand because the two pitches move on different planes.

His curve is still effective just based on it being a semi-nasty pitch so maybe there's a pitch mix change the great Pete Walker could come up with. lol.

Maybe we can trade for a new pitching coach too?

Astros probably had a claim in on him. Use him in relief, scrap the sinker, and see what kind of velo he gets throwing an elevated 4-seamer in 1-inning appearances. He doesn't need much to be effective with that curveball.

Speaking of the Astros. McCullers is registered as having a sinker and not a 4 seam fastball too. Based on pitch usage, Godley is essentially McCullers minus 5 MPH

Yeah my bad just took a quick look at his pitch info/pitch velocity numbers, didn't go into how often he used each pitch. That just jumped out to me. Dude is getting killed when using his FB either way. Not a bad guy to pick up and see if they can fix his pitch selection, but yeah, Pete Walker is not the type I'd feel comfortable fixing anyone.

Pete Walker couldn't fix me a sandwich.

This has been on my mind for a while. We finally agree on something. I'm not totally convinced Walker is bad, just wondering if we could do better.

Maybe he can develop a wicked changeup.

If not, a knuckleball might work too
