Would have preferred using Miles for 1 inning yesterday and 1 inning today than 2 innings today.  

The fact our idiot "braintrust" was so locked in that they didnt want to adjust to yesterday's game shows how little feel they have.  

Please do a cleanse to get some people who know the game on the team next season man.

Do you often see pitchers used on 1 day rest after throwing 44 pitches in a game? Let alone the situation you described in wanting him to throw 3 days out of 4 when the first day was 44 pitches?? Let alone with a guy who's pitched 15 innings total over the previous 2 seasons and is already 1 out shy of 90 IP this season?

Didn't think so.

Well they've basically been running a 2-man rotation and I'm amazed at how well it has been working. This is largely due to the "braintrust" coming up with plans that the bullpen has mostly executed.

They tried to split the baby last night by saving relievers for today's bullpen game while also locking down the win last night but it blew up in their face.

Was it the worst decision in the world to use Mantiply against two lefties last night? Maybe but he has had a good year and in his past 4 appearances he had gone 5.2 innings while giving up just 1 hit. Mantiply needed to get one of those lefties out but couldn't do it.

Unfortunately Varland wasn't very sharp either.

Yeah, I'm not a JS cheerleader by any means, but every 5 days he has 2 starters, 2 bullpen games where the bulk has to come from Spaghetti/Lorenzen, and then whatever they get from Max. Not many managers are going to run a successful bullpen with that. He clearly planned to use Fisher tonight, which might explain why he went with Mantiply in the 8th instead. Having to manage this way is simply not sustainable, so there's not much he can do some times except hope some of the scrubs he puts in out of necessity work out. Unfortunately it didn't last night. 

Last night's loss was brutal, but the WC3 field still stinks, so there's still a glimmer of hope. Just have to win the next 2 and keep winning every series.

Mantiply vs LHB this season/career by OPS against:   .599/.646

Fisher vs LHB this season/career by OPS against:    .750/.657   

Ergo, Mantiply the better choice by season to date, basically a push career but ... Fisher's career much shorter so some likely variance there. 

What about lately? Who's pitched better lately?

Last 14 days by OPS against:

Mantiply:    .583 (28 PAs against)

Fisher:    .728 (19 PA against)

 

So, hard to really say it was a bad decision because "intuition" or whatever argument is being presented. Fluharty wasn't available so it was either Mantiply or Little and i can't even imagine the whining if Little had come in and gave it up. Mantiply was the best choice available unless you wanted a 2 inning push from Varland and probably sidelined him for the remainder of the series when you consider what his pitch total might have been. 

Seems to me there's not really a valid argument against the move. What "intuition" would be present to make him think a guy who has struggled overall lately and has struggles against LHB all season was the better choice?

Good points.  Little has been much better of late though.   

Lot of bone headed mistakes the entire game that you want to pull your hair out. 

Stranded RISP early twice with bases loaded. Could have blown the game wide open, and the pitching choices would have been a non issue. 

Leaving Soriano on a batter or two too long once he lost his zone. 

Varland can't field a routine 3rd out and give up the lead etc. 

Macadoo is pinch running on first and doesn't steal, resulting in a game ending DP. 

Finding a way to lose.

Well we are 11-8 since the Yankee series. Good enough for a .579 win percentage and a 94-win pace.

We were the best team in the league the American League.  Not many teams can say that.  Only the rays were better and maybe a few other teams.

I will accept the L for not knowing Miles threw 44 pitches in his last outing.  Just remembered it was 2 innings so thought he could easily go yesterday.  

Then I will switch my viewpoint to just using Varland for 6 outs when you used him for 5 outs anyways.  Top of the Rangers lineup was super high leverage and Manitply hasnt been in that spot.

Its like people maybe dont have the right perspective.  the difference between a 95 win team and an 82 win team is about 2 wins per month.
