Talent evaluators around the league are still scratching their heads about the Stroman trade, though not only because the Mets were the team to land him.

Toronto’s return – pitching prospects Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods-Richardson – has been widely considered to be lighter than expected. Three executives from competing clubs said that the Blue Jays’ asking price for Stroman from their clubs was considerably higher than the one they ultimately received from the Mets.

One even wondered why Toronto would have settled on this deal on Sunday rather than waiting until Tuesday or Wednesday, when pitching-starved contenders might have been more desperate to add an arm of Stroman’s caliber.

“It’s hard for me to understand,” the NL executive said. “Every team values players differently. Maybe moving the money was key and other teams weren’t willing to take it all. Or possibly he wasn’t tops on any other team’s list, so Toronto felt like they should capitalize to make sure they didn’t miss out altogether.”

On first glance ... eww.

After looking Hatch up ... eww.

I'd rather we just kept Phelps and exercised our option on him. Someone has to pitch innings next year.

That will be Hatch.

How much worse does this narrative become when the Astros get desperate tomorrow and give up Tucker+ for Bauer?

For Bauer, they'll be dancing.

Well Bauer is substantially better than Stroman and follows the Astros' model to a tee, so unless the + is significant it shouldn't make a difference for us.

Well this puts things into perspective really quickly.

#BlueJays closer Ken GIles visited Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas today, source tells The Athletic. An MRI revealed no structural damage in Giles’ elbow, but upon Meister’s recommendation, the pitcher received a cortisone shot. Will not pitch again before deadline.

Well... At least the 'no structural' damage part is good.

I'm not so sure this is true. Stroman has put up more WAR in his mostly healthy seasons (outside of last year), and lower xFIP.

Bauer has thrown 1060.2 innings in his career with an xFIP of 3.98, producing 16.9 WAR.

Stroman has thrown 789.2 innings in his career with an xFIP of 3.57, producing 14.7 WAR.

Bauer has an xFIP under 4.13 in only 2 of his 6 full big league seasons (and this year is not one of them). Stroman has been under that mark in EVERY year.

This will be the 4th (out of 6) years where Stroman exceeds 3 WAR. This will be Bauer's 2nd year (out of 6).

I would be shocked if he gets traded now. We are probably looking at less than half his value at this point. This really goes back to Montoyo’s inability to keep the asset healthy by his bizarre usage. 3 days in a row fresh off a DL stint comes to mind. The 4 out saves he came in for despite wins not mattering at all. And the outings he would let him throw well over 20 pitches in tie games. Really disappointing result. Especially it Giles ends up being even more hurt than todays reporting and ends up having surgery resulting in us getting zero return for him next year. A lot of disaster scenarios unfolding infront of our eyes

I'm not sure it's fair to compare their careers. Bauer's talent level or present day ability has clearly changed since his first few seasons with the Indians. He's a premier strikeout pitcher with a rubber arm so he'll basically pitch every game in the playoffs if you so desire, and his ceiling is clearly higher than Stroman's. Stroman is incredibly consistent but I don't think he's the better pitcher or the better asset. In the present landscape of the game, I think a minimum of 25/30 teams take Bauer without thinking twice given his last 3 years of performance, and more importantly last season where he was one of the best pitchers in baseball.

How so

Exactly, they just said that the Jays were asking for is considerably more than what they got. It doesn't mean that teams we're offering considerably more talent. For example, I heard the Jays were asking for Kiriloff or Lewis. Maybe the Twins were offering Larnach + a couple non prospects. And the Jays valued Kay and SWR more even though Larnach is on the backend of some top 100 propsect lists.

I wonder if Shapiro and/or Atkins are actually looking at Montoyo's performance objectively this season. He's their guy. Do they have the stones to actually look in the mirror and say 'f***! What is this guy doing'. Or will they suck each other's dicks and say they're happy with him.

Front offices probably do more because of his strikeout ability. However, even in recent years (including this year), Stroman has out-pitched him in 2 of those 3 years. Bauer has had one elite year in his career that I think skews how people view him, but he doesn't appear to be that guy this year (or any of the other years). It's really startling to look at his FG page, compared to what you would expect to see.

I've been defending Shitkins the past couple of days here. I really don't think they were offered more than what they recieved in the Mets deal. That's said, if a rental like Wheeler gets back more, I'll riot!

I'd be OK with a Giles extension. I don't think that's going to happen but honestly liked everything I've seen with Giles.

You would think Hudson has value than what Phelps did, correct?

Hard to say, he doesn't have the extra year option, but as solid as he's(Hudson)been, I'd assume similar value, maybe more.

Snakes and Yanks talking a Ray for Frazier trade. Just updated on MLB Network.

Straight up? Yuck, that's worse than the Stroman trade (and I happen to LIKE Frazier).

Not sure, they're all over the place... tons of scuttlebutt.
