The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 At this point in time I'd rather Freddy Galvis over Asdrubal Cabrera. Galvis is easily the better defender, which would help out our younger pitchers more once they start rising up this year(if you believe in that type of thing). Would also possibly help improve the stats slightly for extreme GB pitchers like Stroman, maybe increasing his trade value.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 At least we won't have to watch Gurriel at SS for too long. Now definitely seems like they're going to give Pompey a real chance. The real test will be if they trade Pillar.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 Another guy that doesn't get on base lol. Not going to complain though its a short term deal and at least hes good defensively.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 I guess this moves Urena to Buffalo for depth, as it should be. Only 22 and could use some more work in minors. Galvis also could bring a decent prospect back at trade deadline. So this signing does make sense.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 That club option is nice too. Nice!
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 Really was above average with the bat in the second half last year. Don't know if he made any fundamental change...but if can improve a bit with the bat and keep up with the defense he's a solid asset
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 Eh, whatever. Galvis probably sucks anyway.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 Would be nice if Galvis could come close to providing the value Marco Scutaro did when he was with the Jays in 2008 and 2009. Scutaro posted a 4.2 WAR in 2009. More than whatever Tulo did here.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 I'm glad they made the signing. It was nifty and gives us an INF option. But Galvis kind of sucks. He just doesn't suck as hard as Urena is all.
bzapple Verified Member Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Good, Galvis is a staple on bad rebuilding teams.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Nothing beats the off season prior to the 2014 season when it come to boring (signed Navarro and then practically did nothing else for a whole year after that) but this off season league wide has been s***. Even these sensible non threatening moves are so minor that it makes no difference at all, and it seems like 90% of the teams are operating like this.

By the time the season starts, almost all of this list should be signed:
APhonyMax Verified Member Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Surprises me that Marwin Gonzalez hasn't signed. He can't be asking for too much money, and his versatility alone should make him valuable to many teams with hopes of contending.

He was asking enough that Houston who knows and loves him best thought it was too much. To the point they traded for Diaz and gave up a potential SP.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Most of the top free agents are now signed. By the time the season starts, almost all of this list should be signed: We are going to head into February soon, and the top two hitters (both 26), top SP (arguably), and top RP on the market will be unsigned. That's just idiotic. What fun is baseball when we are watching a bunch of teams trying to out cheap the other, and off-seasons feel like they are centuries long because of lack of player movement? The Jays signed Galvis for $5m, and that's a lot of money in today's market. I'm not saying Shatkins or the other teams are wrong for doing it, but it doesn't make for a fun winter, and then once the season starts there will be like 4 good teams in the entire AL, and a bunch of s*** after that. Just very disappointing.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 We're getting Galvis at a reasonable cost I guess, but it's certainly an uninspired contract. He's mediocre with the bat and fangraphs has his defense as average for the past 2 seasons. If he ends up getting significant at-bats then we're in for a long season. He's not a quality regular.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I think we need to forget about winning, and enjoy the arrival of the NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK. There will at least be some excitement.

This is like goins and barney all over again. If he gets 500PA just kill me now
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 This is like goins and barney all over again. If he gets 500PA just kill me now Excuse you - those are two battle tested, playoff caliber players.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 This is like goins and barney all over again. If he gets 500PA just kill me now Except we were a playoff team when Goins and Barney were here, now it doesn't matter as much. As others have said, this move is all about not having to have Urena on the roster, when he's not good enough. In the minors Urena has a (small) chance to improve enough to eventually stick.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Here's a nice write up on the signing. It's more about Gurriel since Galvis is a known commodity. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/freddy-galvis-gives-the-blue-jays-options/
Sorrow Verified Member Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I'm happy with this. I wouldn't be surprised if by mid-May or early June our IF is Vlad, Galvis, Drury Smoak.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Not sure why all the dislike for Gurriel Jr. This kid is 2 years from playing in Cuba, and 1 year from being unable to hit at Dunedin. Sure he has some things to learn, but so does every other 25 year old. All I see is UPSIDE. and I love seeing him play.

IMO he has more chance as either a utility player or 2B.

Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
