Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 (edited) Well you see, this is called a baseball forum where people tend to discuss these type of things, since.......well.......its a baseball forum FAIL This isn't Facebook or the Sportsnet comment section. This board typically likes to discuss facts. You, randomly posting lists of ******** motives is pointless and stupid. That isn't what this board is for. Edited June 10, 2019 by Brownie19

You, randomly posting lists of ******** motives is pointless and stupid. That isn't what this board is for. People shouldn't be disrespectful or make light of the situation, especially as news first reports first broke and his condition was uncertain. Otherwise it's fair game to talk about what the motive may have been. Probably 95% of what is posted here isn't fact and is speculation. Trade speculation, performance speculation. Does anybody know why Vlad was benched yesterday??? Regular maintenance or because he didn't hustle on a couple of plays?? No one knows for sure, but we can discuss. Same with the Ortiz situation, as long as it doesn't venture into bad taste.
Ray Verified Member Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 Congrats to Edwin for hitting his 400th HR over the weekend! Does he make it to 500?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 Congrats to Edwin for hitting his 400th HR over the weekend! Does he make it to 500? Good question, I'd probably bet against it unfortunately. Let's say he hits 15-20 more this year. He'd need 80-85 more homers from Age 37 on. That's going to take 3 seasons. Will he still be productive and hitting enough to find the playing time in his Age 39 season? I guess the other option is if somehow can manage to find work as a pinch hitter late in his career like Jason Giambi. Giambi squeezed out an extra 5 seasons starting at age 39 simply by becoming a punch hitter who got 150ish ABs a year. That got him 30 more extra homers. It seems like teams are trending away from using the 25th roster spot on veteran presents though.
BTS Community Moderator Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 If Edwin does get to 500 homers, he probably still finishes at less than 40 fWAR (he's at 33.3 right now). Does he get into the HoF? It's crazy that we're even having this conversation about a guy who was waived in his age-27 season and finished his age-28-season at 7.5 fWAR. Would be kind of like Randal Grichuk suddenly going on a 10-year run as one of the best hitters in baseball.

It would've been really interesting to see what the voters would've done there. There's less than 0 case for both WAR wise, but 500 HR is such a huge milestone. Granted, the juiced balls kind of take away from HR's now a days.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 You know, I didn't like Edwin at 4/80, but damn I wish we waited a bit and got him at 3/60. One fewer year just looked a lot better. Although that means no Nate Pearson, so maybe not.

We should be at a point where we look past a single milestone to judge performance. We discussed the possibility of Nick Markakis getting to 3,000 hits, which is similar to EE and 500 HRs.

Pearson is like 95% of my future excitement for the pitching on this team

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 Holy s***... the bullet did hit some major organs, very lucky Big Papi, the Bosox sent a jet to bring him to Boston. At a press conference, Dr. Abel González confirms David Ortiz had wounds that required resection in the large and small intestine, colon and liver. He will travel to Boston today to go to Mass General.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 Just of interest - Kevin Pillar doesn't show up in any of the lists. Reaction, Burst or Route. In his peak defensive season (2016) by UZR, DRS and Statcast, his jump was +1.0 feet above average which is about ~0.3-0.5 feet from being in that elite group it seems. He's consistently rated well by route, but his reaction has usually been around average with his burst declining year by year, likely as a result of aging and the wear on his body from all those diving plays. The interesting thing is that although his sprint speed has never been in the upper echelon, certainly not for CF, he was still making a lot of those difficult plays. So something about his closing speed, or the ability to maintain his top velocity combined with taking good routes and his lack of care for his body on diving opportunities is what made him so good despite his jumps being nothing special. With that said, Statcast has never been a big fan of Pillar since 2016, seemingly placing him as more of an average CF, whereas DRS loved him in 2017 with UZR a fan but more reserved, then a decline in 2018, and a much steeper decline in a small sample in 2019.

I really like that MLB is taking the initiative and providing these interesting metrics to the public along with the explanation, bridging the gap between the uninformed fan with less publicly available data and the top tier analytical front offices.
