BTS Community Moderator Posted May 8, 2019 Posted May 8, 2019 It's his 2nd no-hitter too. Is Mike Fiers the worst pitcher to ever throw multiple no-hitters?

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2019 Posted May 8, 2019 Fun fact: I benched Humber for that start in DDL. Against me
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2019 Posted May 8, 2019 The improvement of Matt Chapman K% is pretty remarkable. AA/AAA - 30% 2017 - 28.2% 2018 - 23.7% 2019 - 14.8% Reminds me of Kris Bryant 2015 - 2017 Chapman's a beast. One of the very best in the game who's probably going to go unnoticed for awhile in Oakland.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 Sale at 99 pitches, 12K, BSox bring him back out in the 8th Seems not wise
5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 Fun fact: I benched Humber for that start in DDL. I remember that start cause I bet on the Sox that day! Was a 1 PM PCT game and I believe it was the Fox Saturday game of the week. Humber also should've walked Brandon Ryan with 2 outs in the 9th, but the homeplate ump called him out with what IMO was a clear check swing.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 I don't think Beane will make the mistake of trading away another MVP caliber 3B to the Jays Offer him Drury, Gavigglio and Warmoth, he's bound to make roughly the same trade again!
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 I don't know if you could create the same deal exactly as I can't think that the Jays have 2 mlb ready pitchers with 4-1 k/bb rates in the minors... You'd have to start with Drury and Groshans, Groshans is at about the same age and performance level as Baretto was. then add in two MLB ready pitchers. Maybe something like Drury, Groshans, Borucki, and Thornton. (And before the Peanut Gallery starts saying "Yo Olerud, You Stupid" (and at this point I can't even predict which way I'd be stupid, like if the trade is lopsided for Toronto, or Oakland). So I'm not saying I'd make that trade, or it's fair for Oakland, or it's fair Toronto, I haven't thought about it that much, just saying if you wanted a similar 4-1 it would be something like above)

As far as I'm aware, there are no such rumours about Chapman.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 Vladdy for Chapman - done. nobody bit on this? Who says no?

The difference between this proposal and the AA trade for JD is that from the Jays perspective, it didn't weaken the ML team and only made it stronger.. Lawrie for Donaldson was plus, plus... No way I trade two young and controllable ML starters with upside for one position player.. Especially when we are the opposite of a surplus. Plus not for nothing, I don't think Groshans is same level as Baretto.. I think he is much more highly thought of as a two way player.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 nobody bit on this? Who says no? I would certainly hope the Jays said no to that. Outside of Trout who really shouldn't count anyway 'cause he's not even human, I don't know that there's a more valuable asset than Vladdy at the moment (considering cost, age, control, upside etc.).

Acuna Jr. Maybe Albies because of the insane contract? Bellinger Soto?

The JD trade was one of the worst fleecings in the past 5-10 years. The proposed trade is even more lopsided for the Jays. A low-probability outcome is that 1 year of 1 roster spot of Chapman outperforms all of those players over all of their controllable years combined. Any exec who doesn't take that trade would be fired on the spot. On Barreto, he was a top 100 prospect at the time of trading and elevated to top 20-40 in subsequent years. Groshans is currently unranked (although he will very likely be there in the coming offseason). Historically speaking Barreto was as highly regarded as Groshans if not higher.

Chapman's the best defensive 3rd baseman in baseball, who looks to only be improving with the bat and is coming off a 6.5 WAR season at age 25. He's on pace for another 6.5+ WAR season this year. If you made that trade right now, you'd get 5 years of Chapman v. 7 of Vlady (I think - I'm sure you guys will correct me). 2 years means a lot - don't get me wrong, but if Vladdy's ceiling is Miggy - Miggy's only had 2 seasons with more than 6.6 WAR and averaged 4.6 WAR over his first full 7 seasons. I think you'll get as much WAR out of Chapman's age 26-30 seasons than you will out of Vlady from age 20-26. With the contact improvements he's made, he may approach the 8 to 9 WAR per year value (recognizing he was 7 WAR over a 155 game season last year). I'm probably underselling the age thing and whatever the likelihood of us signing and retaining Vlady for his age 27-33 years - I just think his lack of defense is caps his value, while Chapman looks like he's already better than Machado and Arenado. Plus he's not fat as f***.
