BTS Community Moderator Posted May 6, 2019 Posted May 6, 2019 A bit surprised to see the Rays flip Font to the Mets for cash or PTBNL. He's been pretty good this year, and projects as a useful arm.
Ray Verified Member Posted May 6, 2019 Posted May 6, 2019 Nick Senzel just hit 2 lead off home runs in the first 2 innings against the Giants. Meanwhile, Vlad is sitting at a .465 OPS. He's gonna figure it out, but it'd be nice to see the real him sooner rather than later.

Thought not what you want to be leading... yeeesh - it's rough times in Minny. Best team in the league + a new stadium and still nobody attending. I think MLB teams need to face the reality that baseball games are expensive, there's a s*** ton of games and people simply aren't interested in attending as much as they used to be. Retrofitting stadiums with larger seats/aisles and reducing capacities to 30K-40K may be necessary.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 33% drop for the Jays is massive. They're beating everyone by a ton.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 33% drop for the Jays is massive. They're beating everyone by a ton. It's a combination of baseball as a whole not being popular (everywhere not just Toronto), Shatkins willing to tank for at least a year if not more, and Toronto being a bandwagon baseball town. Baseball is practically irrelevant in the mainstream. It's completely regional now, and when there is no hype even in your own city, then it's going to spell disaster for attendance. Shatkins could have rebuilt while still trying to field at least a palatable roster. They chose not to. Maybe it will be the right move in the end, but it's going to hurt short term.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 33% drop for the Jays is massive. They're beating everyone by a ton. Jays opened with 4 against the Yankees last year. First series alone they were down 44,000 compared to this years 103k four game series against Detroit. Haven't faced the Sox either and I'm pretty sure we did in April last year. Not saying it's good but I'd say it was expected.

I love that the Rays and Twins have combined for 30k a game (Rays 13.6, Twins 16.6) 4,600 a game less than the Angels.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 How much patience does ownership have to suffer through this poor attendance AND poor W-L records? Will they hang in there with this front office for another year? Two? Five? I'm not seeing much hope of turning things around in any less than 2-3 years.

Attendance is probably not as big a factor for Rogers as it is for many other teams, they need content for their sports channels and I'm pretty sure the Jays still have higher viewing audiences than darts.

I don't think it's any of that so much as the fact that you can pay $130 or whatever for MLB.tv and sit on your couch and flip though literally any game on the MLB schedule that interests you an watch it in HD on your 55 inch TV. Fighting traffic, paying $30 for parking and $15 for a beer is pretty unappealing in comparison.
