So Edwin Jackson is starting, you can get an alternative spread of -2.5 on the Yankees, for 2.10

Isn't that the easiest money ever?

Yes. Hope you made a big bet.

Coors field Edwin Jackson is like one of those you can put down a mortgage payment and then quit your job afterwards (not encouraging you)

Then you're going to love this week's episode of Radio Scouts Podcast...

God I wish I rehearsed more.

Walked into that one unprepared for what was coming.

I didnt say let him start every day.

Its smart to perhaps let him build on his confidence a little

True enough. I mean, he got a hit. One hit. A key one.

Maybe if we played him today he'd get more confidence and then we could trade him for Burgerman

Atkins got extended.

Of course he did. His boss who hired him pulls all the strings. He has lost every single trade that he has made as far as I can tell. Just horrible asset management. Can't imagine having a worse combination of hitting, fielding, pitching on our MLB roster than what we have.

And this Hernandez at CF. WHY, is he better than Randall in CF? Every descion he makes just stinks.

Grichuk for basically nothing

Diaz for basically nothing

Diaz for Thornton

Martin for Sopko and Brito

Osuna for Giles, Paulino and Perez

Sounds like a bunch of wins to me

Don't forget about letting DSJ and Chris Rowley go

What ever will we do without Chris Rowley?

DSJ update - wRC+ <100, 0.1 WAR. He's a replacement level player guys.

Atkins was saying last night that they've moved Randall back to RF because they think his defense is above average there (and that's where he'll provide the most value). They obviously don't feel that way about his D in CF (numbers support that) and thus they are going to try and find/fill the CF position in the meantime.

The reads off the bat are easier in CF and we know Teo has the speed and arm. His defense has already improved significantly this year and thus I have no problem seeing what he can do in CF.

Iceman - you've said a lot of dumb things in your past couple of posts, so I suspect you disagree, but whatevs

Lol ouch.

DSJ, the 26 year-old replacement level outfielder and Chris Rowley the 28 year-old with a 1.22 K/BB and a 11.02 ERA/8.50 FIP/7.40 xFIP in AAA?

Man if those are some of the only bad moves that come to mind as a GM then Ross Atkins better be in contention for Executive of the Year.

Its isn't just about avoiding bad moves, its also about making good ones.

Anyways, the STroman and Giles trade will define his time. Failure to get MLB ready players who will make an impact will be adios muchaco

Travis Bergen is a 25-year old reliever with a 4.24 ERA, 4.83 xFIP, a 6.7% swinging strike rate, and a wonky shoulder.

DSJ is a 26-year old outfielder with a league average bat (at best) and horrible defense

I love when things work out exactly as they were expected to. I can't believe the whining over those two on this forum.

I believe this would have been in the context of - mid/long-term projections of position player talent. Not the context of 2019 position player talent.

Still arguably an awful quote, but if, pre-2019, you're thinking of:

Jansen C - stud

Guerrero 3B/1B - stud

Bo SS - stud

Gurriel 2B/LF - chance to stick

Biggio 2B/3B/LF - chance to stick

Grichuk RF - known good commodity

Alford OF/BN - skills to maybe stick

Assume at least one of McKinney, Teo, Tellez, Drury = a long-term piece

2020-2021 impact: Smith, Groshans?

Then it doesn't seem that awful.

The Giles-Osuna trade was a wizard move under the circumstances.

The rest of those moves are simply adding pretty marginal talent for nothing and then just cutting payroll. Not a bad job to clean the slate like that but hes going to have to take a 100 loss team and make them competitive in a very short window or he won't be around to see it through. This means he'll have to be very aggressive in FA which can be dangerous.

Rays are trying to win, do you guys think they would do

Try it in reverse. If Jays were contending would you do Vlad for Brandon Belt, Baumgardner and Smith??

Anyone know the details of Atkins' extension? I keep seeing that it's through at least 2020, but I imagine the term actually has to be longer than that? A 1-year extension would indicate to me that Mark Shapiro isn't convinced that Atkins is the right guy for the long-term.

Maybe it's a Gibby style deal...perpetual 1 year extensions.

Isn't Shapiro only signed through 2020 as well?

It's quite possible that the management structure we see today may not last for much longer, whether by choice or by Rogers wanting to change things up. I'm sure Shapiro would have other options available if he wanted to leave or if ownership decided not to extend him beyond his current deal, but Atkins would be toast.

Yeah, Shapiro's contract expires after 2020. He's good as his job and would certainly have other options if he or the team wanted to end the relationship. I really hope to hear news about a multi-year extension for him soon, because the course of the team is right even if a lot of the individual decisions haven't worked out.

And you might be right that Shapiro's contract status limited the options available to him when it came to Atkins. Maybe he didn't have the authority to extend Ross beyond 2020? The dynamic between the two is really interesting to me. I'd be interested in knowing how much rope Atkins actually has with Shapiro, assuming Shapiro is here beyond 2020.

Tanking of this magnitude must take commitment from the top down. I would be shocked if either of Shatkins left the team unless it was their choice. What's the fireable offence right now? We didn't lose enough games?

I don’t think either should be fired, but I’ll be surprised if Rogers signed off on a 95-100 loss team this year, and I certainly don’t think they’ll be ok with repeating it in 2020. I’m guessing there will be pressure on Shatkins to improve the product.

Just finished reading about the Padres having an OF logjam. Would it make sense for us to try and buy low on Manuel Margot, whether it be as a secondary part of a package for one of our big chips or just in general?
