That is the great question. Why do younger players sit? I've never heard anything about the why it is important for their development. The orgs that do it (Dodgers, Rays, Astros and Cubs) are orgs that seem to have smart front offices. But I would love to know the why.

Because players don't play as many games in the minor leagues and the grind of a MLB season is insane. Rookies aren't used to playing every single day.

He was being facetious, Bob.

I think it's partially what Bob has alluded to about them getting their bearings when it comes to MLB's brutal grind.

But I think it's mostly because the idea that you need to play every day to better your development is a myth. Playing tired seems like a good way to develop some bad habits. I think keeping someone fresh is probably going to develop them best. This is just me spitballing though.

I get the argument for pitchers, not so for hitters. Muscle soreness maybe? That's what announcing day-to-day or the DH is for.

It's as if there has never been a player playing 162 games a year before. Get these guys back on the juice or the special sauce of the 70's if it's that much of an issue.

No, whats even worse is benching a player after he's gone 2 for 4 with a HR the day before.

You never, ever should do that. Especially a young kid who needs to build up his confidence

Speaking from experience Rob?

Montoya is really gonna catch s*** if Vlad now goes on an 0-60 slump.....LOL :P

I wonder what's more likely to cause a batting slump. Playing everyday despite fatigue, or getting regular days off to stay fresh.

They couldve waited a day though

Yeah I would just DH him 2 days instead of completely resting him for one if I had to pick.

That obviously seems like an option; however - let's not dismiss the fact they have a team of experts who are hired to develop a plan for physical health and development.

I'm not picking on you Term, but it's incredible how quickly people with little to absolutely no idea about the topic are quick to judge and suggest alternatives. I mean sure, it would be ideal if the team took into account certain dates that you want him playing (for the casuals) - but, as has already been pointed out - this FO looks at the long term.....and - most of the best organizations in baseball - the ones that are widely considered the to be the best are utilizing this approach.

Do fans want a great organization who's focused on creating a long term, competitive winner? Or one that caters to the casual fans?

Just because most casual can't grasp that concept - doesn't mean you change the game plan.

I have my doubts about this, considering the weight issue that has been discussed ad nauseam on here. Whatever the Jays are doing with him, they've been doing a piss poor job of it, and giving a day off is way down the list of things they should be doing. If they had to give him a day off because he's so out of shape because the team has done a piss poor job of conditioning him thus far, that's a new level of incompetence.

Shouldn't a day at DH basically be considered a day off? Or is it a situation where you don't take BP on an off day, but do if you're DHing, so you actually save yourself a few dozen swings with an off day?

Lol geezus.

If I gave you the first part of that tweet about bunting practice and told you to come up with a way to make it sound even worse I doubt any of us could actually beat the real tweet.

Sorry everybody but I'm not buying the argument that these scheduled off days are crucial towards the development of future HOF Guerrero Jr. This was nothing more than a massive brain fart at the hands of everybody involved in the decision making process from the top down. When the team is this bad PR is an important part of the organization.

Load management doesn't happen in absolutes where he HAD to sit yesterday. This wasn't a suggestion from the uber smrt sports science team. They made a mistake and it won't happen again by the sounds of things.

Jesus. My faith in Ross Atkins has taken a hit this year. That would have been an obvious conversation to have with your manager given this team’s massive PR problem.

I miss AA.

Atkins and Montoyo have annoyed me so much this season that the GM I couldn't wait to see leave has now become someone I look back on fondly.

Damn you Atkins.

Literally no one will remember Vlad sitting out Victoria Day by the All-Star break, let alone a year from now. This is the stupidest issue ever for everyone to throw up a big fuss about and the fact that it's still being talked about is ridiculous.

I do agree..but it does paint an organization that doesn't have its s*** together. Now Head office is saying it was Montoyo's decision lol.

When the team is a dumpster fire little things get magnified. Now Atkins is throwing his manager under the bus over this lol. To think it all could have been avoided if Vlad simply would have been given the day off before or after.

Not really. The incompetence by everyone involved is staggering and I believe that's what has people up in arms the most. You've got to know who butters your bread, and it this point its Vlad and Vlad alone. The PR nightmare is well deserved

Why not give one of your worst hitters the lead-off spot. May as well give them more AB's.

Yeah, this is gonna kill our playoff chances for sure.

My favourite so far was that Dad who said he'll never come to another baseball game again cause he brought his kids to watch Vlad play. I feel sorry for your kids!

Offer them a f***ing bobblehead and they will be right back at the games. Toronto fans are officially the worst in the majors.

Don't be such a heartless robot about it. I was fnnn pissed when I planned a trip to Toronto with my family in July to see the Jays and the fnnn dome was closed on a Monday holiday game, beautiful day out and dome was closed because it was hot. Going to see baseball on a Canada Day Holiday at 1 pm when everyone is on the Island enjoying themselves and inside a 1/4 full dome sucks!! Really pissed me off and ruined the experience I was looking forward to.

If you are a dad and you are able to finally get time to take your kids to a come, drop at a minimum two bills, MINIMUM. Taking your kids to see the stars and they are not playing for a no good reason and the team gets wooped up on and loses 10-2, it sucks...

I don't feel the dad should be criticized.. Lineups are posted with enough time the GM could have stepped in if he really, "would have advised Charlie about the importance of the holiday".

Especially as it smeared all over social media hours before they played.

I was taking a shot at this Dad going on TV to complain about it, and claiming his family will never be back. I get it, I drove to Buffalo to see Vlad play. I like seeing good players play This guy and his kids just got to see Betts, Benintendi, Devers, Chavis and Price. The issue that the Jays have one player worth watching is a legitimate complaint...but fans should know that going in, and what is the team to do, play him every home game regardless of what their development says?

Jays fans have proven time and time again that they don't support stars when Halladay pitching did zero to increase attendance. I'm being cold about this because we all know what this season is, it sucked that Vladdy wasn't here to start the season. Get over it and enjoy some really average baseball.

Also I am in Saskatchewan right now. As soon as people find out I'm a baseball fan they tell me they are going to a series this summer. They are pumped about it because they love baseball. Not because they love Vladdy.
