Random thoughts here. But I'm sick and tired of seeing casuals saying Martin is crap and should retire when he's been a top 3 player on the squad this year with 2 WAR. They can't see past the BA and understand his OBP and his decent power almost make him an average hitter. I cringe so hard when I see people also saying the contract has been bad when they should be more than satisfied that a old catcher is more than worth his cost in the 4th year of the deal.

I agree, but Fangraphs has Martin at 1 WAR, not 2. Where are you getting 2 WAR from?

I said this in the other thread. The Martin signing has worked out about as well as you could expect. He was a rock in our lineup when we made our push and when it's all said and done, he'll provide surplus value. Even during his declining years (where were expected), he remains a good clubhouse guy, a leader and now a mentor to Jansen. And now he's providing extra value has a utility player. He may be one of the Blue Jays best FA signings ever.

Baseball Reference has him at exactly 2 WAR.

The Russell Martin contract was one of the best things Alex Anthopoulos did in his time here. He's provided 8.6 fWAR so far on his $82.5M contract, and will probably finish the deal at about 10 fWAR. That, on it's own, would be fine given that in his two most productive seasons the wins he provided helped the team get to the playoffs.

But his value goes beyond the fWARs. He's provided wins via framing, and the unquantifiable stuff has value too: he's been a steady, consistent presence behind the plate and in the clubhouse, and by all accounts pitchers love throwing to him.

This is the kind of expensive free agent splash that serious teams with big payrolls can make once in awhile and really set themselves apart from the Tampa Bays and Oaklands of the world.

How are BR and Fangraphs so different? I know there are minor differences in how they calculate it, but that seems like a huge gap doesn't it?

Let's hope for .260/.410

I guess, but that's completely unrealistic given his age and career averages. Him being .230/.350 and a 1-1.5 WAR player is probably the best we will see at this point, and that's perfectly fine for a 36 year catcher old next season.

McKinney up!?

I guess Shatkins really doesn't care about service time manipulation after all because McKinney's ceiling is tremendous, Justin Upton-esque, and he's obviously a top prospect.

I would love to see McKinney hit a couple fly balls to RF for homeruns to f*** over his old team. I like that they chose him to come up. Edited by Jonn

Is it just me or are the batting averages all the league way down.

Some of the so called best hitting players are hitting under 250.

Or is the pitching that much better.

Like Bryce Harper is hitting 243

Josh Donaldson who has been hurt for most the games .234

This year they is only 10 players hitting over 300. American league

And in the national league they is only 9 players hitting 300.

You can handyman him all you want but he's not wrong about averages going down. Sure, they don't mean what they used to... But it just shows that the philosophy towards hitting had changed a lot. Walk, strikeout, homerun.

You think he picks up on that? The 3 outcome has been around for a long while? I'm tired of this meathead.

Batting averages without any other info are useless.

Who's a better hitter, the guy hitting .243 or the guy hitting .293 ?

I'm just taking about hitting averages as it pertains to comparison with respect to historic numbers.
