There's basically two points. One is that your top 3 or 4 hitters are generally in the top 4 spots, and nowadays guys in the pen usually have better stuff than your back end starters. If your reliever can get through the first, then your starter will likely have to face those guys one less time in the game, which is actually a pretty big deal. The second point is that managers aren't gonna pinch hit in the first, so you can get the exact matchups you want.

I'm not fully read up on the Angels' thinking regarding Ohtani but isn't it possible this guy is worth more as a RF than a SP? Especially taking into account an expected increase in reliability (hitter vs. pitcher injury risk)?

 

He has 1.7 wins as a DH with half a season worth of PAs but how good could his defence be with that range and an 85 arm?

 

And does he add a win if you use him sparingly as a high leverage reliever?

 

I posted something like this a few weeks ago. You'd have a hard time convincing me that he should still pitch.

 

You're talking about a RF who's projected at a 121 wRC+ (and might actually be better than that), who also has an 80 arm and 70 speed. That's Christian Yelich, with louder tools - could be a 5-6 win player.

It's absolutely possible... maybe even likely. He has double plus power and he can run and throw. Imagine if prime Jason Heyward had 70 power. That's a monster.

At this point its clear he's got some of ridiculous raw power. If he figures out how to hit lefties a little better he's gonna be an elite hitter.

Ohtani's wRC+ just crept up above Juan Soto's. Obviously the age difference is substantial, but what Ohtani is doing as a hitter this year is very special. If you just took a 23/24 year old hitting prospect, in isolation, and gave him a .380 wOBA in his rookie season, with 10% BB rate and .275 ISO, you'd be doing backflips. Those are essentially Giancarlo Stanton's career numbers.

His platoon splits are absolutely massive, but they are able to shelter him from LHPs because of his unique situation. I'm curious to see if his total ineptitude against same side pitchers continues as the sample size gets larger.
