vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 Has anyone else been looking at a 'commercial break in progress' screen in the Dodgers/Padres game for the last 5 minutes or more? What in the f*** is going in? Gameday says "delayed: power"
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2018 Author Posted August 26, 2018 The game resumed and ended very quickly.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 So the Padres are trying out Wil Myers at third. Um, okay.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 I know you have said that they've been wanting to implement this for a while, working out brilliantly and seems to have been pretty well accepted throughout the league in terms of teams trying this strategy as well.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Gleyber Torres is not a shortstop.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Gleyber Torres is not a shortstop. They should trade for Martin and put him there I mean, they had Jeter there for years ...
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 TIL big game James Shields is still pitching at the ML level.

Serious question: What’s the point of it? I don’t see the strategy in it?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Serious question: What’s the point of it? I don’t see the strategy in it? There's basically two points. One is that your top 3 or 4 hitters are generally in the top 4 spots, and nowadays guys in the pen usually have better stuff than your back end starters. If your reliever can get through the first, then your starter will likely have to face those guys one less time in the game, which is actually a pretty big deal. The second point is that managers aren't gonna pinch hit in the first, so you can get the exact matchups you want.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 I'm not fully read up on the Angels' thinking regarding Ohtani but isn't it possible this guy is worth more as a RF than a SP? Especially taking into account an expected increase in reliability (hitter vs. pitcher injury risk)? He has 1.7 wins as a DH with half a season worth of PAs but how good could his defence be with that range and an 85 arm? And does he add a win if you use him sparingly as a high leverage reliever? I posted something like this a few weeks ago. You'd have a hard time convincing me that he should still pitch. You're talking about a RF who's projected at a 121 wRC+ (and might actually be better than that), who also has an 80 arm and 70 speed. That's Christian Yelich, with louder tools - could be a 5-6 win player.

It's absolutely possible... maybe even likely. He has double plus power and he can run and throw. Imagine if prime Jason Heyward had 70 power. That's a monster.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 LOL at the Mets actually expecting something in return
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Meh I see no reason for them to help the Phillies without getting anything in return. Sometimes there's financial upside but that's not really the case with Bautista's minimal salary .

Fair but honestly they should be thrilled to get a PTBNL and maybe give Bautista's at-bats to a young player.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Yet again some top notch analysis from Sheryl Ring of the Fangraphs. "How LeBron James’ Tattoos Could Affect Baseball" https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/how-lebron-james-tattoos-could-affect-baseball/
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 On July 25th the Padres offered a ticket package where you got a seat for $99. This ticket was good until the team had 5 home wins. In the month since the ticket first sold they have managed to get 3 wins. Cost per game to date $6.60 cents per game.

Considering they are out of the playoffs, i wonder how many fans showed up hoping they would lose for an extra ticket and better draft position.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Ohtani with another monster shot.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Orioles traded 750k of international money for a 24 year old 1B in rookie ball, I think they have relapsed.

Thaddeus Malice Verified Member Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Holy s***, Ohtani! It's crazy the number of people at the beginning of this year who said he should not even try to hit. I remember a number of guys on this forum saying it was a waste of time. At this point its clear he's got some of ridiculous raw power. If he figures out how to hit lefties a little better he's gonna be an elite hitter.

Obviously the age difference is substantial, but what Ohtani is doing as a hitter this year is very special. If you just took a 23/24 year old hitting prospect, in isolation, and gave him a .380 wOBA in his rookie season, with 10% BB rate and .275 ISO, you'd be doing backflips. Those are essentially Giancarlo Stanton's career numbers.

I'm curious to see if his total ineptitude against same side pitchers continues as the sample size gets larger.
