Man, Jose Ramirez is one of the most underrated players in the game. Dude just hit his 29th jack of the year! He's already at 6.3 before the start of the game and he's only 25!

I don't think he's underrated. Everyone seems to recognize him as a superstar.

meh - I think the general public would underrate him. I never realized he's only 25. Jesus.

The general public doesn't know who Mike Trout is

Jon Gray with 7 shutout innings on 84 pitches so far, but he's given up 2 hits and 1 walk, so he'll probably get demoted for that.

His free agency will be interesting as he's publicly stated he's only going to sign one year deals.

lol... really? That'd be incredibly dumn.

“Personally, I will never sign a contract longer than one year,” Bauer said. “That’s how I feel. I’m going to take one year. I’m going to take maximum annual average value contingent on the fact that I’m allowed to pitch every fourth day. And that’s my deal. It’ll be great for the team because there’s no risk. And assume it’s $42 million – $42.0 million – then if they’re not in the race, they’ll end up paying only two-thirds of it. And then they can trade me for prospects. Or if they’re in it, the contract’s worth it.”

The notion of seeking the highest AAV on a short-term deal is something agents for years have played out in their minds, only to advise their best clients to choose the security of a guaranteed long-term contract. Bauer’s priorities are different. His desire to win a World Series is a huge part of his one-year-deal calculus.

“I’m always on a contender, so I don’t get stuck in a contract with a non-contender,” Bauer said. “I’m either on a contender I sign with or get traded to one. This is contingent on me pitching well. But I spend so much time honoring my health and training, I have a lot of information that says I can handle the workload. All the risk in that situation is on the player’s side.”

It will make for a fascinating case study if followed through upon. I remember that Paul Kariya had a similar stance early in his NHL career, only wanted to sign short term deals in attempt to maximize future earnings.

Not really related but he also signed a dirt cheap one year deal in order to take advantage of a loophole that allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent earlier.

It's an interesting stance. Can only be qualified once.... or if traded can't be qualified anyways. I like it for pitchers tbh.

I think I like it less for pitchers than position players. The only part that makes sense to me is pitching for a contender every year.

I can understand if you were gunna sign a real long term deal ie. 6 or 7 years. But if he pitches well he can make more in 4 years with salary inflation and going for it then he would over 6 or 7 today dollars. Bet on yourself. If it's a bad bet you still got paid huge for a couple years.

That's true, but then you could argue that he'd be better signing a 3 or 4 year deal (maybe sacrificing $10M for the guarantee of $120M), THEN going year to year after. If he suffered an injury, it could take him 2 years to get back to the earning potential he had before. I don't know, it'll be interesting to see. As I said, I like the idea better for a batter.

What's interesting to me is that he wants to pitch every 4th game.
