All Minor League innings past the requisite nine frames this season will begin with a runner on second base, in a manner similar to what was used in last year's World Baseball Classic. The runner will be the player previous to a team's leadoff hitter for that inning in the batting order. Teams may substitute a player with a pinch-runner, but the player removed will not be allowed to return to the lineup.

Somehow this is not a joke. Please let this get scrapped quickly and never threaten to reach the majors.

Manfred wants to attract millennials, but has no f'n clue how to do it.

This change won't happen right away, but it will happen. Manfred's quest to attract young fans by changing the game rather than changing the way MLB actually promotes the game and its stars.

Wow, after seeing the video I agree with Verlander 100%. That was horrible.

Manfred seems to suspend players for being accused of domestic violence (whether they actually did it or not is irrelevant). This case should be pretty cut and dry.

Yeah he's banned for life.

Well baseball teams have employed convicted killers and rapists before so a vicious video-taped assault on a woman shouldn't be a categorical barrier.

But he also isn't very good.

No his numbers are very Lackluster for a 24yr old in AA. I would doubt this guy will even be able to find a job in any independent leagues

He's looking for baseball's version of shootouts. Maybe a home run hitting contest. That'll be next.

This was a given no?

Yes

People don't seem to get too upset about it anymore, seems like standard operating procedure

People were maybe a little sour with the Cubs for doing it with Bryant, but they were expected to contend that year. On a non-contending team like Atlanta it makes zero sense to let him start the year in the majors.

Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports that Giants outfield prospect Gustavo Cabrera has elected to retire (Twitter links). As Baggarly chronicled in a harrowing story for the San Jose Mercury News in March 2016, Cabrera could have lost his right hand at 17. Then a vaunted prospect who had received a $1.3MM signing bonus a year prior, Cabrera was simply bracing his hand on a glass table as he bent to pick up a spilled glass of water, but he slipped on the wet floor and sent his arm crashing through the table, severing nerves and causing catastrophic damage. Baggarly details the frantic process of saving Cabrera’s limb and his ultimate return to the baseball field in a must-read story. As for Cabrera’s decision to retire, Baggarly notes that the physical challenges simply became too much for his reconstructed wrist/hand. He adds that while the Giants do have a recourse to claim a portion of that $1.3MM bonus due to Cabrera’s early retirement, the organization has no plans to do so. Best wishes to Cabrera in his post-playing days.

Good on the Giants, poor kid lost his dream.

Jesus christ that was nauseating.

Dude would've been fed by most of his team, if they saw that, he's lucky. It's disgusting, punk POS.

Astudillo with the trick pick-off:

I guess it helps to include a shot of 1B.

I think Atlanta is a lot closer to their contention window than the Jays are. Pitching isn't there yet, but their offense/defense is already on the cusp of being Cubs-esque from a few seasons ago with Freeman, Albies, Acuna, Swanson, Inciarte, Tucker....

Ohtani 2 for 24 with 7 strikeouts in ST so far (usal caveats noted. New environment, nerves, small sample size, spring training, etc)

But not how he wanted to start I'm sure

Tough call for Mike Scioscia if he keeps that up - how many games do you let him DH in the first copuple months of the season. On the one hand you want to give him a chance to adjust to MLB pitching, on the other hand you're a WC contender and you don't want a better hitter sitting on the bench all the time while Ohtani suxx at the plate.

I do hope they give him enough of a chance to hit regularly and I'd love to see him be good at both in the majors

I feel like he shouldn't have wasted this neat trick in ST.

Matt Bush has a major league contract. That says it all. If you have talent, they will sign you. Morals be damned.
