rydermike Verified Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 And here we are in the top of the 40th inning. We have set the mlb record for most sacrifices in a game with 120
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Uh, yeah, no. I actually enjoy extra inning games from time to time. Usually I do if I'm actually driving all the way to Toronto to watch the Jays play, and it hits extras, I get more baseball for the cost of the ticket and trip. I know it's a runner starting on 2nd for each team, each inning, but I have the feel this would really benefit the home team more than the road team. If there is a runner at 2nd and a weekly hit ball makes it passed the IFers, it's a run in. It could barely get by, or maybe a throw is dropped or goes wide, so instead of having a runner on who's actually earned their way on base or reached via an error, you get a run in and possibly set the tables for more runs. If it's the home team a dribbler, error, ball in the gap, game over if the road team can't bring their runner in. Or if the road team does get theirs in, home team has one of the 3 hitters due up homers, ballgame is over, because it's not a solo shot, it's 2 runs because of this idea. Many have suggested ways to speed up the game, without screwing with what makes baseball unique, and how it's always been played. Extra innings will happen. You might have to bring in your utility guy. If you want to avoid that, maybe expand the roster to 26 so you can have an extra arm. Yes, sometimes extra innings become a drain because they go on so long. If you're going to make an arbitrary rule, why not pick an inning and/or length of time where the game is suspended, and the teams play a double header the following day, or on one of the extra off days to officially finish the game? If you're going to go with this rule, you might as well create a new column called the "Unearned Win" since you're not really earning it, if you're given a runner is scoring position to start the inning who didn't earn their way on base or the defense made an error. Extra innings have long been part of the game. Sometimes they go on longer than anyone would really like them to, but it happens. If you want to make sure the players get to sleep before their next game, don't burn out your 'pen, run out of pitcher, etc., then suspend the game, make it up later, if need be (one or both teams are playoff contenders) and use one of the off days, or if you're going to just start putting guys on base, in scoring position, why not just say, after 3.5 hours or the 15th inning (just numbers I pulled out of thin air), each manager will come to the field, the crew chief will flip a coin, and whichever manager calls the side it lands on the mound, or home plate area, their team wins the game.

Governator Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I've played with this rule, first batter is squaring to bunt almost every time. That's because you play with dummies.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Why wouldnt they put him on 1st? Not saying that's what I would propose but second just seems like some arbitrary decision
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I've played with this rule, first batter is squaring to bunt almost every time. Do you play softball or hardball? Either way I don't pay 200 bucks every season to bunt or even walk lol. Your league takes it to seriously

Well it's a good thing they are looking at speeding up intentional walks. This will go right hand in hand!
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I'd prefer that to this proposed rule... Not sure why they care about extra inning games anyway. All it is is more revenue to the game. How so? Is alcohol not cut off before the 9th inning in the US? The TV deals and advertising isn't affected each game... if anything you'd think broadcasts would enjoy this type of rule and maybe put more trust into the game cutting out several programs they promised viewers they would offer. I agree it's obviously stupid from a baseball standpoint. All they care about is dollars. We would all still watch the games and it might draw more viewers in and make ESPN, fox sports etc a bit happier. Might make me watch less often though, to be honest.

closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 f*** this. Stop f***ing with the game. I love those epic 14+ inning games. I will go so far as to change the channel just to watch one. I guess it makes sense in the minors where players are riding buses but this is a joke. Get rid of managers walking up the dugout so that the replay team can watch multiple angles before challenging if you want to save time.

When I'm looking at games to watch on MLB.TV I'm looking for extra inning games or games tied in the later innings.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I would support some variation of this rule as long as playoff extra innings remain normal.
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Make hitters stay in the box. Actually enforce it! Limit relief pitchers to 5 warm up pitches. Use a 20 second clock between pitches. There are so many other ways to increase pace of play without taking away from the purity of baseball. Giving ball and strike calling over to machines might cut down on a lot of this. Pitchers and hitters will often step out and walk around just to show their dismay with the strike-zone... and lets not forget coaches coming out of the dugout throwing s*** around and kicking dirt on umpires.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 This is completely asinine and I hope it never comes to fruition in the minor or major leagues. The league needs to think of fans instead of pandering to television networks. No knowledgable fan would consider this a positive change and neither will the players.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I would support some variation of this rule as long as playoff extra innings remain normal. I was just coming on to say this. I love the International rule and always have. Only way we are seeing Sac-Sac from the home team would be if the road team doesn't score or if it's really useless hitters at the plate and they used their PH's already. I love 17 inning games, when I'm at home. At the stadium with no concession stands and annoying fans, I'd rather a quicker extra inning game. Killing pitchers and seeing position players pitch is fun for fans but way more of a gimmick than a player starting on second. I 100% support this change...providing it doesn't happen in the playoffs.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 As someone who's been a part of a 19-inning Jays game thriller in the stands, f*** this proposed rule so much.

rydermike Verified Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 If someone sac bunts in extras to move the go ahead to third with 1 out, the next batter gets a 4 pitch walk almost everytime to setup the DP. well they wouldn't need the four pitch walk, just let him go straight to 1st with manfred's other proposal. But the sac fly is still in effect for the next batter after the walk. Although in reality, I don't know if that strategy would be popular in the top half, knowing the bottom half will do the same thing. Top half probably plays for multiple runs, bottom half definitely goes for the sac/sac play if it's tied in their half.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Do you play softball or hardball? Either way I don't pay 200 bucks every season to bunt or even walk lol. Your league takes it to seriously Softball (fast pitch). Keep in mind regular season games would just end in a tie so we're only talking playoffs when the "international rule" gets used for extra innings, but it's always been a semi - serious league and fairly high caliber. I like it that way, it's good to have a competitive outlet and I figure I'll keep running and sliding around until I can no longer enjoy it. I won't be up in arms if they go to this for the regular season after 12 innings or something. It better not creep into playoff games though.
rydermike Verified Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Although I think any change is not necessary, would something like a designated fielder rule in extra innings make more sense? (ie, after inning 10 or so, team designates 3 players who become designated fielders and the order becomes a 6 man rotation). For example, for us, we could become a lineup of Travis-Bautista-Donaldson-Morales-Tulo-Martin with Upton,Pillar, Smoak as designated fielders. Gets rid of the worst hitters and promotes offense by having the best hitters play more. I'm not really a fan of that either, but I'd prefer it over an automatic runner on 2nd. Trying to find a parallel between the NHL 4on4 now 3on3 overtime for baseball.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 If they want to speed up extra innings during the regular season my preferred tweak is to start Plate Appearances with 1 or 2 balls.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 This will never happen, too much potential advertising would be lost Also I don't get manfried's end game here. Why do this? He's talked about trying to up the youth interest in the game but does he really think cutting time here and there will do that? IMO there are other things he can do that don't touch the game's essence that can have more of an effect than what he's doing

Also, fix the system at the replay center so it doesn't take 8 minutes to make obvious calls.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 The only way to increase Baseball's popularity is to dramatically decrease the number of games each season. We're talking like 100 games a season MAX. 162 games is just too much of an investment for some people, and its the reason Football will always be #1 in America. Its a sport you only need to commit 1 day each week to support your team.

I absolutely love looking forward every day to the Blue Jays playing, or some other team in the off chance that there's a day off. The fact that baseball is always on is the one best parts of the sport.
