I only remember him because I had a classmate who bought his jersey due to them sharing a last name. Our team went through some really obscure players the 5 years or so prior to making the playoffs. And we've only just talked about outfielders! Brad Wilkerson also comes to mind. Let's not forget the legends of the infield that were Joe Inglett and Mike McCoy. Curtis Thigpen - wasn't ECJF a fan of his?

Guys remember when we almost signed contender for ugliest person in baseball, Ronald Belisario?

Even though we've established that using PA as a league-wide cutoff is useless and that the average player will post 2 WAR in 650 PA, I decided to quickly finish with my search since I had already started it.

Wanted to see at what point does the average player in the pool contribute 2 WAR, regardless of how much more he played beyond that. It seems that point is 300 plate appearances:

2016: 268 players with 300+ PA: mean WAR of 2.10

2015: 268 players with 300+ PA: mean WAR of 2.02

2014: 263 players with 300+ PA: mean WAR of 2.10

2013: 277 players with 300+ PA: mean WAR of 2.05

2012: 265 players with 300+ PA: mean WAR of 2.11

2011: 265 players with 300+ PA: mean WAR of 2.03

The average WAR among players with at least 300 PA each year seems to hover around 2.0-2.1 WAR. Narrowing or widening the pool any further makes the number too big or too small.

Interesting, even if the information is worthless.

I also try to keep in mind that "average" doesn't mean "bad"

A team loaded with 2 WAR players who stay healthy and a couple of 4-5 WAR players is a playoff team with a good chance of doing well in the playoffs

A team loaded with 0 WAR replacement level players and a couple of 4-5 WAR players does not

Mike Bordick

Bordick was pretty solid here in 2003 - 1.8 WAR.

I remember Greg Myers back in 2003 and him having a breakout season at the age of 37 or 38 lol. Slashed .307/.374/.502 with 15 HR's and 1.7 WAR in 121 games. How was his pitch framing, just curious?

Yeah he thought he was the second coming of Barry Bonds. Hilarious to think back.

Also, he had a thing for Dirk Hayhurst I recall.

Love how Bautista turned down better offers.

Such ********.

What makes you think it's bs? I'm sure the details will come out eventually. I wouldn't be surprised if the Phillies, Braves and A's were all willing to offer more $.

Such ********.

There were reports that he was approached by multiple teams and he did say in his presser that there were talks between the O's and his agent so idk why you would think that's BS.

Zwelling pointed something out that Bautista might have come to the realization that staying in Toronto would be his best bet because he's invested in his brand in Canada and Toronto specifically. You can still walk downtown and see Booster Juice billboards with his face on it. Theres no other market that would help him keep growing his brand at this stage of his career, with this much reach, than being a Blue Jay. I think there's some merit to that

It's ******** in one of two ways.

1. Was he really offered more money/more term? I'm skeptical. I don't think he was. But for arguments sake, let's say he did turn down more money and/or more term elsewhere. That gets me to ******** #2.

2. We all heard LOUD AND CLEAR, during last years Spring Training what Jose thought about Home Town discounts. He already gave the organization a home town discount and was crystal clear in the fact that there was going to be no more home town discount being given.

So the decision we have to make i this...

Was Jose really offered a better deal and turned it down? If so, then he's full of s*** for puffing his chest and saying no home town discount.

Take your pick.

True. Me mom can barely walk usually. But after the shot, she can do cartwheels. I don't support cheaters in HOF.

Its not cheating if everyone is doing it. Why should we punish the guys who came out and admitted steroid use, while giving a free pass to the scumbags too ashamed to admit it?

when you're negotiating coming out and saying you're willing to sign for a home town discount doesn't really strengthen your position. That was where he was last year. He didn't specifically say he turned down more money elsewhere. He was asked if he turned down more money elsewhere and he responded saying he had other options but this is where he wanted to be. I have no doubt he had another team willing to go more than one year. He wouldn't have got a higher AAV on a two or three year term, but he would have got more total dollars.

You clearly don't like the guy. I don't think he crawled back to Toronto because he had no other options. I found his statements to be completely genuine, and there were reports prior to christmas saying he wanted to come back. The guy is one of the all time franchise greats. He loves it here and wants to be here. I find it easy to get behind a guy who bleeds blue and wants to be a Jay.

This ties in nicely to what JPA said about Bautista being really into business and into his brand.

He doesn't make it easy to like him. He's not a very likeable character at all.

This is a very good deal for the club. The bat is still very dangerous, and that alone is well worth the money, but I'm glad he was taken down a couple of notches throughout this whole process. I think a big helping of humility can be a good thing for him.

I'm excited to see a bounce back year for Bautista.

Last year couldn't have gone much worse for him, two major injuries, he looked done as a outfielder, the punch, and his dreams of a "deserved" big contract shattered.

Jeff Passan was quoted today saying Bautista did get a 3 year offer north of 50. I guess the guy you were skeptical about really did want to play in Toronto and took less money to do so just like he said in his presser.

I know he rubs many the wrong way, but he doesn't bother me with his words and actions. I'm a big Jose fan and I hope he kills it this year!

It was a good deal...Even if you don't like him you can understand the value of the deal.

I like him...but i usually like attitude players brings something extra he would be a Don Cherry kinda guy if he played hockey, I tell ya that
