justafan Verified Member Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 Cespedes' contract is a good comp. I'd offer him around $27.5 million/yr for 5 years in the offseason and see how he responds to that. Machado and Harper being on the market the same year definitely hurts him. But by all accounts, it seems like he likes being in Toronto and I think he has a good relationship with the front office as well. This would be so much easier if we didn't have Tulo's contract on the books. Well, it would be nice to have JD but that is too much $. Did you ever look at the roster and ask yourself where did these guys come from? Sometimes they just fit in and are protected by other hitters. Joey, EE, Smoak, Osuna, Sanchez, Biagini, JD, Estrada, Pillar etc. Most came from nothing or the minors. Free agency and these old guys are not worth it. have a great team and buy rentals at the deadline. Let Joey go. Wait another year for JD. Pray Travis can play a full season, find some speed and a pitcher who can burn innings. IMHO (just a rookie).

It's a great idea to have good cost controlled players but you can't bank on Bautista or Estrada like breakouts. It's honestly a miracle that it looks like we got lucky again with Smoak. The strategy should be to fill up the roster with good young players from the minors and relatively cheap role player veterans then spend big money on 3 or 4 superstar free agents to bring you over the top. This team has money and should certainly use it.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 I just want to give a shout out to the bullpen Damn. They've been great I credit the BP as the main reason we're on the upswing and winning more than losing lately Good work
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 Not many WC teams playing today so we will end the day 3 games back and move in to a tie with two teams who were ahead of us. Went from last in the AL East to tied for 3rd as well.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 So, over the last 10 games, the Jays are 7-3. At the start of the Yankees series, which started this 7-3 run, the jays were 5 games out with 7 teams in front of them for the 2nd wildcard. 10 games later after playing .700 ball, they've gained 2 games, but still have 7 teams either ahead or tied with them as 2 of those other teams have also gone 7-3. I like optimism, but the odds are still very long

We all know that this team is capable of reeling off a big streak in the second half.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 At least the standings are worth monitoring again. Donaldson's impact seems to go above and beyond his WAR contributions. Should they have kept Joe Smith? Hmmmm.

If he's headed to the 'pen, I wouldn't hate grabbing someone like Jesse Chavez for a no-name prospect, just to solidify the rotation a bit. The Angels would obviously have to crash and burn a bit, which I keep expecting, but it never happens.

Yeah I'd be up for a move like that although between Biagini, Rowley and maybe Brett Anderson that might be enough to patch up the two spots surrounding Happ, Stroman and Estrada. I'd like to see a similar move at SS. Then add Travis to 2B and Sanchez to the pen and let's see what happens in September.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 How about Assdribble? His bat is due for a positive regression back to career norms. The defense is probably below average now, but he can play 2B, 3B, and SS. Honestly, he's pretty affordable too, and it probably wouldn't take more than a top 30 prospect to get it done. $18.5m / 2 Years (2016 - 2017) + 1 Option Years (Edit) signed by New York Mets on 12/9/2015 (Free Agent) 2016: $8.2M, 2017: $8.2M 2018 Team Option: $8.5M ($2M buyout) Depending on waivers, of course. I know the Mets were shopping him hard before the deadline. The Jays were considered out of at that point - or at least, certainly even more of a longshot than they are now. It might make sense if he's cleared waivers.

Even a guy like Scott Feldman would be preferable in my opinion. The rotation will decide whether we make a run or not.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 How about Assdribble? I had thought about him but I think his defense has fallen off a cliff. -9 DRS in 45 games at SS. That's pretty much unplayable. His baserunning is awful too. -10.7 which is worst in the league, even worse than Kendrys. He's not a bad hitter though and in theory he is versatile. He has an ok option too. But he just can't seem to play SS anymore.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 Cozart is the best option out there but I wonder what he would cost. He's actually good so probably something of value. Not sure how far he makes it in waivers either.

I don't know how meaningful (or true) this is, but word has it he wants out of New York badly and has been disruptive in the clubhouse. As crazy as it is to type, it's entirely possible that he's not even giving his all if he's unhappy with his current situation. If the Jays only acquire him for the stretch run and potential postseason, theoretically he'll be a happy camper to play for a team in a playoff race. After the season, the option is declined and he's gone. And he'll be cheap to acquire. Might be worth a shot at this point, though I'm not sure who else might be available.

Yeah I mean even if his defense is bad he's better than Goins and Barney. He's owed over a mil for the rest of this year and his option next year is 8.5 million with a 2 mil buyout. Maybe give the Mets a lottery ticket and see if they'll pay for his buyout. If they did I might even consider picking that option up given our glass middle infield.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 I wonder if we could make a play for Almedys Diaz. He's 27, seems to be out of the Cards plans. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more than a rental.

I think it would be expensive, that's a lot of years of control. Maybe he's been figured out, sophomore slump, the hand was still bothering him this year...¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 He isn't a FA until 2022... the Jays would have to trade and it would be expensive. My bad. I just saw the 4 year contract on fangraphs that expires this year. I'd love to know what the cost is to acquire him. I agree that he wouldn't come cheap.
