I guess the other question is what can you get for 13M per season out of the SP free agents this off season and can you expect to nab one

My suspicion is you can't get someone as decent as Happ for rhat price

Yeah I think we'll struggle getting 2-3 starters from free agency. There's not that many and we're obviously not the only ones who'll be interested.

One internal, one trade, one free agent is more realistic.

Which is another reason he should have significant trade value. This is all whether you think the team can actually compete for the playoffs next year. If you think they can, you keep Happ. If you don't - you trade him now while he has more value.

I don't think it's that simple. I think even people who think the playoffs are realistic next year (including me) realise that certain areas will need to be improved.

Happ is relatively risky (old, and a pitcher) and only on a one year contract so trading him for fair value isn't necessarily indicating that we're giving up on next year, if a trade brings back at least one MLB ready player in a position of need.

Osuna has already matched his 2016 season bWAR (2.1 WAR) in 34 less innings. Threw 74 innings in 2016. Right now he's at 40. Insane.

It wouldn't surprise me at this point if they bring Estrada back on a smaller deal. Shapiro openly said he hates the free agent pitching market, and Estrada has been bad enough to where he might be affordable on a one year deal if they think he can bounce back next year.

I could see that as well.

MLBTR: Blue Jays lefty Jeff Beliveau has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A, per a club announcement.

Sure. Seuly Matias would also be an interesting lottery ticket.

I'd love that, but I'm not sure we'd get that type of lottery ticket. Maybe the demand is higher than we think, who knows. I could see a guy like Billy Burns being a reasonable return.

Billy Burns is horrendous, we might as well just trade Liriano for a pure salary dump or keep him if that's the best we can get for him.

There's zero reason to keep Liriano unless we think there's some microscopic chance of making the playoffs. Otherwise, we're just paying several million for the hell of it. Save that money for next year. Burns would serve fine as a 4th outfielder, is controllable, cheap, and a stolen base threat off the bench. We could do a lot worse. He's basically Barney / Goins in the outfield, but with added stolen base ability.

If we're trading away a SP, it would be interesting to nab Brett Anderson for the remainder of the season. Get a look at him while it doesn't matter. Maybe you can sign him for the min the remainder of the season, with a team option for next year if you're guaranteeing him a spot the rest of the year.

Price hasn't been a good fit in Boston. And also he seems to be having persistent arm issues. But he could be a fantastic buy-low candidate for the Jays. Especially if his arm is just tweaked and not really injured.

The BoSox need a SP for 2017, and are shopping around now. Maybe Estrada or Liriano work. Prolly Estrada because the Sox have so many lefties. And what if part of our asking price was Price.

The Jays don't have a lot of SP on the farm, and two of five are FAs after 2017. Price is a much-needed lefty and seemed to be a good fit here.

I am not sure if the BoSox would eat a lot of salary. I am not even sure you can trade a player who's on the DL. But it's something I find interesting.

I don't think they would do that, out of fear that it would bite them in the ass within the division. I don't think we would take on the ugly contract in addition to the health concerns.

Not a risk I'd want to see us take, glad we dodged that bullet in free agency. Wrong side of 30 with a massive contract and elbow issues? The upside just doesn't stack up.
