burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I wonder how much it would cost for the Jays to build a dormitory like building for at least their low level minor league players. Most of the teams are in areas that are fairly inexpensive and they could provide housing, proper diet, and training facilities all in one place where they could be monitored by the coaching staff. It wasn't in the proposal for the Dunedin facility. Shapiro said the cost of owning the building+ maintenance wasn't worth it. The Lansing stadium has apartments right beside the stadium that a lot of the players live in which is a pretty good setup.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/how-financial-security-for-minor-leaguers-would-benefit-everyone/ I feel like this is a good thing to bring up again, how minor league players are woefully under-budgeted to provide for themselves. I felt like the use of the heirarchy of needs of "realizing one's potential" was used literally which made me cringe, but this problem seems to becoming more aware. Does someone know if the Jays are one of the franchises starting to provide for their minor leagues with proper allowances? I'm not sure how prevalent it is in the lower minors to have 8 guys share an apartment, but even 1 instance of this is pathetic. These are still people that you employ and they're being treated like garbage
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 At this point The Cleveland pitching staff is the greatest pitching staff off all time by fWAR. Still possible (but unlikely) that they put up a negative the rest of the season but still an impressive feat.

Ray Verified Member Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Verlander has been incredible since the ASB: 14GS 9-2 1.89 ERA 0.808 WHIP .169 BAA 6.1 bWAR I hope he continues to pitch like this for a couple of years. I'd love to see him get into the Hall of Fame. He's been a joy to watch pitch over the years.

Towards the end of the game, his velocity kept increasing every inning. By the 9th, his fastball was in triple digits (think he had maybe a dozen pitches in the 101 to 102 range). Really impressive display.

Heck yeah He and Miggy are so synonymous with the Tigers and have been for so long So odd to see them one and possibly later both playing elsewhere

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Judge gonna win MVP
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Judge gonna win MVP He likely does because of 50HR but my vote would still be with Altuve. Just seems like an all around better player. I could be wrong just my take.

I could be wrong just my take. I agree, but they're close. Either could win and I'd have no problems with it.

Funny because they couldn't be more different. Judge this massive OF with towering power who strikes out a lot while Altuve is a tiny speedy high avg type.
Ray Verified Member Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I hope Altuve gets it. It's a tossup between him and Judge really, but Houston getting an MVP after the disaster they went through would make for a nice story.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 TOS surgery for Carter Capps. That’s pretty much it for him. Wow, dude wasn't even fully recovered from TJS and now he's heading for TOS. Well, his career may be over, but he'll always have an MLB Rule nicknamed for him.

After seeing what happened to him (and let's be real, EVERYONE know that his career would be very short-lived) is that rule even necessary anymore? Lol. Who's gonna wanna cheat like Capps for maybe a season or two of dominance before being out of baseball with severe arm/shoulder problems for the rest of your life?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 Play stupid games (like pitching with a ridiculous jump step delivery to gain an advantage) and win stupid prizes (funky delivery makes you injury prone).
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 There's a poll on Jeff Sullivan's article today, and 68% of respondents have voted that the Twins winning the WS this year would be good for baseball. I'm surprised by that. I hate the idea of a mediocre team winning it all. What's the point of building great teams if that happens?

If the only way to win was to have a superteam, baseball would be more predictable and it would also encourage tanking even more for any team that isn't elite. Overall, encouraging tanking is generally bad for a sport.

Overall, encouraging tanking is generally bad for a sport. I think there’s a lot of room between a superteam (are the Indians a superteam? They didn’t tank to get there) and the Twins. The Twins are something like a 0.500 team. That’s below what I personally consider acceptable from a team I want to see win the WS.

I think the votes come from if the Twins get the second wildcard and end up winning it all, it allows fans of middling teams to think that with a couple of small changes that could be them. Compare to the NBA, where if you're a fan of the majority of teams you're likely feeling disillusioned.

Without a balanced schedule, this can and will happen from time to time.

I want to see great baseball in the post season, and while the Twins have some good young talent, they aren't on the level of their counterparts. Even the Yankees are a complete rung above them and they are the other WC team. What's good for baseball is the Yankees becoming good again. The league needs marketable stars in big markets and they can sell Aaron Judge as a star. It sucks, but if the Jays are not in it, then might as well root for baseball to prosper. That won't happen with the Twins/Astros ALCS.
