Then Devers blows it with a costly throwing error on a bunt rhat allows the winning run to score

Indians win 5-4

Just checked. Wiki says his 23rd birthday was July 5th this year. So I guess since it was after the signing period opened, he would have to wait until midway through next year to sign with someone freely? I wonder if his current team would accept that request if he asked for it. I doubt they would, IMO

If that's correct. No, he's free to sign with whom he wants now after his 23rd birthday, every team will bid 10 million to be able to talk to the kid.

No Brock Holt ruined it! Devers was at 3rd.

Looked into this more. New age to become a true free agent is now 25. He'd have to wait two more years if he wanted to sign with the highest bidder.

I also found an article from CBS sports back in early July that quoted a MLB source as saying that the league is going to be monitoring the signing team carefully after the first year to see if an extension is signed that doesn't fall in line with typical extensions for second year players. Can't see the league really doing that though. Teams already break rules agreeing to bonuses with guys before the signing period begins. Can't see how a handshake agreement after the player makes the jump to the majors is any worse.

As an IFA... I think you're wrong.

He's heading North regardless, would be nice if we landed him. We can beat the major players!

I'm jelly you got him on your squad in LoD.

Nice, I bet you got some pretty sweet scouting in, then.

He might only qualify as a pitcher or hitter, but not both. It'll be interesting to see how they handle it.

I bet they make him a "SP, UT" to start.

Would they ever make him as 2 different players? One pitcher and one hitter... Then you could also get his hitting stats when he's pitching.

And they're going to change the whole UI so you can drag a pitcher into a hitter's spot? I think they'll just make him a pitcher.

He would have very little value as a hitter who only bats every 5 days and probably isn't a league-destroyer.

Yeah and maybe when you drag him to be a hitter his hitting stats pop up? If he's only batting every 5 days then why bother but if he's getting semi-regular AB's as a DH or something then they might want to do something.

That said I am operating under the assumption that he's a good hitter, you know more about him than I do. If he only bats every 5 days when he pitches then they might just make him a pitcher.

This is probably a moot point. The most he'll be allowed to do is pinch hit, and possibly hit without a DH sometimes if he joins an AL club.

Hard to say. He seems to have been pretty clear that signing will be contingent on being allowed to do both. Given that basically everyone will probably offer the max to talk to him, he can choose a team that will guarantee him that.

I don't see how any team can guarantee him that in good faith. Not only are his offensive skills still very questionable, but he'll be going from 6 days rest to 4 days. I can't imagine anyone would want him playing 1-2 days after a 100-pitch start.

Just say whatever to get him signed and then gradually pull the rug out from under him. He's going to have to run like a 120 wRC+ to get consistent non-pitcher ABs anyway.

Unless he is playing 1B or OF or something inbetween starts

He'll be fairly cheap for his initial contract. A rebuilding team should be able to realistically do so, especially if it's an AL team with a DH. Or a crazy team like Seattle, who would probably put in in CF.

Can you even DH a SP in a 5-man rotation more than like 1-2 times a week? My understanding is a pitcher is basically exhausted and really sore the two days after a start, and you'd expect him to rest the day right before his start. It's really hard to see how this would work in a North American rotation.

You probably wouldn't need to rest him before his start if he's DHing. I could definitely see him not hitting for at least the day after his start though. Really hard to say. He could be the first real legit test case in a very long time.
