Colby has always been one of my favorite players. I loved his effortless left handed power and the fact he stayed true to his roots. His 2013 season was probably my favorite individual season to follow.

 

Hopefully he steps away and doesn't feel the need to come back. It doesn't seem like he's really all that interested in playing.

 

Tldr- do what makes you happy, not what you think somebody else wants you to do.

This. He probably struggled through and forced himself to make it this far. Maybe he knew he could get a big payday and didn't want to committ to a long contract when he has no interest in playing. Atleast try and finish the year though, kinda silly.

 

Or maybe he's leaving at his peak to hit the FA market so he can't decline any more this year

Wow, if things couldn't any worse for the Yankees.. losing Pineda hurts, as it thins their already thin rotation depth and forces Cessa into the rotation.. hurting the bullpen.

 

Basically, it forces the Yankees to start looking for controllable pitchers on the trade market for this season and the next few.. losing Pineda 3 months early to a significant injury puts serious pressure on the team, and may basically give Boston free rein to run away with the AL East, and Tampa and a AL Central, West (and unlikely, but not of the question, the Blue Jays) to steal the 2nd wild card..

Financially, he's set for life, and clearly this profession makes him deeply unfulfilled. He'll be much happier riding fourwheelers and fishing for the rest of his days, living modestly on his small fortune. I'm happy for him.

This also reminds me of the ongoing discussion of free agents going for the biggest payday instead of taking a fair offer from their current (or another) team where they may feel more comfortable playing. Look at how going to Boston for the big bucks has backfired on the likes of Crawford, Price, Sandoval (just DFA'ed). Price to the Cards and Sandoval staying with the Giants (I recall they made him a pretty good offer) probably would have worked out so much better for these guys. Crawford, who knows, I guess it was more the injuries than anything but the Boston pressure cooker likely played a role in his career meltdown.

This is true, but it's also important to recognize that when players sign deals they are also trying to make sure that future players also benefit financially from deals they sign. It's important for each player to sign for as much as they can to ensure a fair split of revenues between players and owners.

Interesting. I vaguely recall him being insulted by their preliminary contract offers, complaining that they didn't appreciate his contributions to the championship runs. But like how Ortiz had his issues with Red Sox management but was able to set it aside, probably Sandoval should have done the same. Oh well, he will get his money anyway and probably a chance to rejuvenate his career elsewhere.
