Braves sign catcher Kurt Suzuki, source tells SB Nation.

Smoak for Recker to back up Freddie. Eat a mill or two if you have to. Then grab a legit OF.

And the draft order is set--Jays are set up well to improve the farm system, even despite missing out on getting a pick for Bautista:

2. Reds

3. Padres

4. Rays

5. Braves

6. Athletics

7. Diamondbacks

8. Phillies

9. Brewers

10. Angels

11. White Sox

12. Pirates

13. Marlins

14. Royals

15. Astros

16. Yankees

17. Mariners

18. Tigers

19. Giants

20. Mets

21. Orioles

22. Blue Jays

23. Dodgers

24. Red Sox

25. Nationals

26. Rangers

27. Cubs

COMPENSATORY PICKS

28. Blue Jays (for Edwin Encarnacion signing with the Indians)

29. Rangers (for Ian Desmond signing with the Rockies)

30. Cubs (for Dexter Fowler signing with the Cardinals)

I would have given Suzuki more than that in a heartbeat. Rumour was that he preferred the West coast, but Atlanta is just as far away.

Kurt Suzuki is awful. Can't hit, can't frame, can't throw... doesn't have the general athleticism that he had when he was younger that made him an above replacement level catching option.

I'd love to pick up Rupp in a trade. Seems like a fit too, since it would free the Phillies up to give Alfaro the full time job with Knapp as the backup. Not sure what it would cost.

********. His bat is more than acceptable for a backup. His framing is average or slightly below, nothing that would be problematic for us. He blocks pitches well and is a good defender. You have unrealistic expectations for a backup if you think he wouldn't be good enough for us.

As usual, you're wrong and frustrated about it.

Sort by 'per game' and look at the last 2 seasons. Last year was -0.40, slightly below average, 2015 was -0.07, almost exactly average. The further back you look, the more irrelevant the data gets.

I'm looking at BP, not statcorner.

In either case. He's a bad receiver which carries negative value. He has a noodle arm which also carries negative value (though not as much). And he's a below average hitter. He's not a good player. If we are looking for a backup catcher who can't hit, may as well get one who is good at defense. Suzuki is good at neither.

The negative value of a slightly below average receiver in a backup role is rather minimal. An 86 wRC+ (both career and 2016) is also just fine for a backup catcher. I'd venture a guess that it would be one of the better marks in any given year.

This problem goes back several years now, where people on this forum simply don't understand what an average backup catcher is.

The average wRC+ for all catchers last year was 87, so that shouldn't be such a big issue. I would like to see a good game caller though, preferably at least an average framer as well who doesn't let baserunners go wild and will get down to block a pitch.

Yordano Ventura car crashed. One unknown person died.

Could be Yordano

Its sad that anyone is passed, but let's hope its not Yordano.

Juan Adrian road accident, identification of the deceased is expected. Vehicle belongs to baseball player Yordano Ventura. #ZDigital

What was the cause? Speed? If it was in the morning he shouldn't have been drunk.

Same as Andy Marte. Speed, alcohol and the road
