BTS Community Moderator Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 I feel a bit disappointed that Iannetta went for 1.5M. He's tough to get a read on, but it seems like all things considered he;s probably a very capable backup.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Hard to attract anyone with real talent to simply backup Russ.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Yeah the Jays will end up signing a catcher who has no aspirations of getting a lot of playing time so it probably won't be a good one.

I wouldn't mind Suzuki all that much but he's probably not taking a strict back-up gig. Maybe Hanigan is still good at framing? I don't know, he sucks at everything else. I've been pretty pro-Shatkins to this point and I still think there's plenty of time left but it's definitely been a little triggering to see Smith and Iannetta moved for pennies on the dollar without the Jays having been involved.

I read that Suzuki would prefer to stay on the west coast because his family is settled there.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Sorry Hurl - I'd rather run the 100 m dash in a 90 m gym than read anything by Bob Elliot. This stuff is what Elliot lives for though. Reading Elliot write about professional baseball is painful as hell. His promoting of Canadian Baseball through CDNBN is his way of socializing now. He walks around a tournament and shakes everyone's hand but he'd also do anything for anyone there. If I wanted an introduction to someone in the industry in Ontario, I'd go through Bob. This is why his honourable mention in this article is bigger than his top 100 list. He just doesn't want to leave anyone out (even though he left out this board...and the new Director of Analytics for the Rays who is Canadian).
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Suzuki is awful They're all awful.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 They're all awful. Hundley has a good bat, but his framing numbers are cringe worthy. They are all only good on one side of the he ball outside of Wieters. If I had to guess, we probably end up with Navarro back unless we make a trade. I'd love to nab Kevin Plawecki in March. If he's out of options, he might come cheap, but I'm not sure.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Nah, they'll roll with AJ. That's possible, and I;d be fine with it if they add more minor league catching depth in Buffalo since AJ can't stay healthy. Please god no do not bring Navarro back.

His defense should hopefully at least make him replacement level, as opposed to Navarro's. I believe Plawecki is a very good framer so I'd be on board with adding him, but I don't think the Mets will be so quick to give up a former top catching prospect for cheap; he'll only be 26 this year so there's still some room for growth.

Agree with you on Navarro. I hate his skill set and really don't want to watch him anymore. Also, I haven't heard Plawecki's name in probably over a year. Guy completely fell off the map.

Also, I haven't heard Plawecki's name in probably over a year. Guy completely fell off the map. Navarro's only supposedly above-average tool, which we can't really quantify, is that he's a good game caller. He sucks at hitting, he's probably the slowest runner in baseball, his blocking is terrible and his framing is abysmal. I guess his throwing arm is okay. He seems like a decent dude, but he is a not a fun MLB player to watch. I will very much welcome a season where our catching depth chart does not include Thole or Navarro. Let's hope Jimenez is passable, but hey they could always rush Reese McGuire though that seems sub-optimal for someone who could actually be a regular in the future.

I only mention Plawecki because they committed 2 million to Rivera and also have d'Arnaud. It's at least conceivable that he doesn't make their roster and they make him available. As for Navarro, I don't really want him back either. It just feels like they will go after him. They liked him enough to get him at the deadline

They liked him enough to get him at the deadline He was a pretty good target at the deadline. He knew most of the staff already, and they seemed to like throwing to him. His bat was really as good or better than most backups (or should have been). The familiarity is less an issue with a full spring training to work in a new catcher though, so I think it's less likely that he'll be signed now (depending on market).
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Get Plawecki included in a package for Grandy, Nimmo or Bruce (gulp). It's odd how different his K% is in the minor vs. the majors.
