Without checking on the framing numbers, all those guys look f***ing terrible. I wouldn't mind Suzuki all that much but he's probably not taking a strict back-up gig. Maybe Hanigan is still good at framing? I don't know, he sucks at everything else.

 

I've been pretty pro-Shatkins to this point and I still think there's plenty of time left but it's definitely been a little triggering to see Smith and Iannetta moved for pennies on the dollar without the Jays having been involved.

This stuff is what Elliot lives for though. Reading Elliot write about professional baseball is painful as hell. His promoting of Canadian Baseball through CDNBN is his way of socializing now. He walks around a tournament and shakes everyone's hand but he'd also do anything for anyone there. If I wanted an introduction to someone in the industry in Ontario, I'd go through Bob. This is why his honourable mention in this article is bigger than his top 100 list. He just doesn't want to leave anyone out (even though he left out this board...and the new Director of Analytics for the Rays who is Canadian).

If I had to guess, we probably end up with Navarro back unless we make a trade. I'd love to nab Kevin Plawecki in March. If he's out of options, he might come cheap, but I'm not sure.

Agree with you on Navarro. I hate his skill set and really don't want to watch him anymore.

Navarro's only supposedly above-average tool, which we can't really quantify, is that he's a good game caller. He sucks at hitting, he's probably the slowest runner in baseball, his blocking is terrible and his framing is abysmal. I guess his throwing arm is okay. He seems like a decent dude, but he is a not a fun MLB player to watch. I will very much welcome a season where our catching depth chart does not include Thole or Navarro. Let's hope Jimenez is passable, but hey they could always rush Reese McGuire though that seems sub-optimal for someone who could actually be a regular in the future.

I only mention Plawecki because they committed 2 million to Rivera and also have d'Arnaud. It's at least conceivable that he doesn't make their roster and they make him available.

 

As for Navarro, I don't really want him back either. It just feels like they will go after him. They liked him enough to get him at the deadline

He was a pretty good target at the deadline. He knew most of the staff already, and they seemed to like throwing to him. His bat was really as good or better than most backups (or should have been). The familiarity is less an issue with a full spring training to work in a new catcher though, so I think it's less likely that he'll be signed now (depending on market).
