Really wanted Dyson. I wonder if KC would have taken Estrada over Karns.

I wouldn't even consider a deal like that even if they would. We don't have any way to even come close to replacing Estrada at this point.

Apparently EE's deal with the Indians includes up to $1m a year attendance bonuses on a sliding scale for total attendances over 2 million people a year.

Can't remember seeing that before, but it's an interesting clause.

If the Jays still had Hutch the Royals might have made that trade. Good Karns comparable.

Then again if the Jays still had Hutch they might not even have made the Wild Card game, let alone won it.

Johnny Damon had a similar bonus when he signed with the Rays.

Encarnacion actually fits Clevelands needs to a tee. Indians are looking really scary. On top of that, Brantley's going to return, they're going to have Carrasco and Salazar healthy in the rotation, and get a whole season of Andrew Miller. Ridiculous.

Just checked, Cleveland were third worst in attendance in 2016.

1.59m at an average of 19,650 a game.

We were 3rd, but best in the AL at 3.39m at 41,880 a game.

It still stuns me that we beat the Cubs and Giants in total attendance. And Boston didn't even reach 3 million.

Fenway Park only has a capacity of 37,949 and Wrigley Field has a capacity of 41,268, compared to the Rogers Centre's 53,506.

Your point still stands though - you've got to sell the tickets.

Right, I forgot how big RC is in comparison to other ballparks.

Still, field a somewhat competitive team and people will come. I've never seen more Jays hats and gear around campus than I do now, and I live in Edmonton. I love it.

I know this isn't what you were getting at but I'm definitely comfortable with how that worked out

Oh yeah I wasn't saying I wish the Jays still had Hutch. Liriano+ the 2 prospects are worth way more.

Cleveland was once a thriving market that was top 5 in baseball attendance...then a certain someone came into power

They were top 5 in attendance, but they were also top 5 in payroll those years. Ownership stopped spending on the team, which means the fans left. They went from a top 5 payroll to a bottom 5 in 2 years. Hard to put a team on the field that people want to pay to watch when you have a bottom 5 payroll to work with.

It's almost like more spending = more fans. Weird huh

The mass exodus of manufacturing jobs from Ohio had the biggest impact on the Indians attendance. People in Cleveland and surrounding areas just don't have the disposable income to dump on baseball games anymore.

And it's that issue that makes it necessary for Cleveland to win and go deep in the postseason--any disappointment and no playoffs which leads to lower than projected attendance will equal a fire sale next offseason with Edwin ending up sent to a larger market.. let's not forget about Delgado when he signed with Miami (Florida Marlins at the time in 2005), who got dealt to the Mets a year later--it can happen again.

Went to a game in Cleve vs jays 2 years ago. Family stayed in suburbs at hotel. Car was in lot for less than 8 hours and was broken into. Even stole wife's tampons. f*** Cleveland

They just made it to game 7 of the WS, bruh!

Cleveland isn't that bad of a city as its made out to be. I mean I wouldn't go there as a travel destination in the States, though to go for a weekend to watch a sporting event like baseball or basketball isn't bad at all. There are definitely nice pockets in the city. Locals are very friendly. There are great bars & the restaurant/food scene has been booming there. Great craft beer selections as well.

Yep, That is what Edwin is getting into. No more wonderful city of Toronto, now its shits town.

It's THIS year I'm referring to. Just because they reached the World Series does not mean attendance will suddenly surge--Cleveland's economy has been decimated by losses in manufacturing, and now a strong US dollar is not going to help.. and talk is that most of the fans at the 2016 World Series games in Cleveland were Cubs fans..

Unless Trump magically makes jobs reappear in Cleveland, it's unlikely you'll ever see a return to the high attendances back in the 1990s when the team was a World Series contender.

Interesting is not the word I would use. We got you less guaranteed money... but I got them to put this attendance clause in to make you extra money. Edwin's agent will not ever be mistaken for Scott Boras.

What wow. He is right on the money

I'd buy it more if the Browns hadn't drawn 514K at an average ticket price of 62 dollars for 8 games. Add in another 2 preseason games that almost sell out and you're over 600K for 10 games. The Indians drew just over 1.5 million over 81 games at an average price of just over 25 bucks a ticket. The revenue generated by the Browns was as much as the Indians and they won 1 game.

Nice try, but you're comparing apples to oranges. That still put them at 24th in the league for attendance.

And their average ticket price is 3rd lowest in the NFL. fyi

He makes a good point that Cleveland fans have the money to shell out for sporting events. They just pick the wrong sport.
