Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 I'd take a flyer on him. His defense is trash but his bat has a bit of potential. I think his projections are probably better than anyone else's on the market other than Bautista.

I don't really see why a bat only, can't run, can't field, broken down outfielder would be preferable to an all around cromulent one like Pagan.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 I'd take 1st half of 2016 Saunders. Full season 2016 Saunders wasn't even terrible. He still put up 1.4 WAR even with that horrible 2nd half, and a 117 wRC+. He can also hit lefties, which is nice. The big question is really how his knee is, and if that was the 2nd half problem.
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 I cant remember if I read it somewhere or just something I perceived in my mind, but wasnt Saunders not the most popular teammate in the locker room?

Completely agree. If the knee is fine I take Saunders immediately, and also 100 times out of 100 over Jay Bruce.

Another way to look at it is that despite him rather improbably providing a full season's worth of playing time, he still wasn't all that productive. I'd be very surprised if one year after agreeing to move him for Jay Bruce, they would re-up with him. You have to figure the sticker price is very low for this to happen.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 12, 2017 Author Posted January 12, 2017 (edited) There was a time a few months back that we were talking about 3/45 type deals for Saunders. Edited January 12, 2017 by BTS

Pagan had a nice bounceback season but at age 35 can he have another? The year before he was worth -0.7 WAR. Pagan was a pretty solid all-round player but with another year under his belt I just don't trust any of his skills to hold up and keep him a solid all-round option. The dam is going to spring a leak soon and it could be his offense, defense, base running...I'm not sure. But 1-3 of those things is going to fall off a cliff soon IMO. If we are looking at more complete players I'd rather just go with Pompey or even a Zeke/Upton platoon which I don't think would do worse than Pagan. I get your hesitations with Saunders though.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 There was a team a few months back that we were talking about 3/45 type deals for Saunders. Thankfully that never happened. Would the casuals hate that as much as the Smoak deal or is Captain Canada basically immune from criticism?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Completely agree. If the knee is fine I take Saunders immediately, and also 100 times out of 100 over Jay Bruce. Aren't Jay Bruce and Michael Saunders essentially the exact same type of player? At least Bruce is more of a sure thing in terms of playing in over 130 games. Though obviously you'd rather have Saunders at $8 million or less (I'm guessing that's reasonably what he'll get?) versus Bruce at $13 million - wtf were the Mets doing when they exercised his team option?

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Safe to say that either Pagan or Saunders would improve the team's collective Handsomeness Above Average score. http://www1.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/San+Francisco+Giants+Photo+Day+qHwki0HsFLjx.jpg http://assets3.sportsnet.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/saunders-headshot.jpg

Well yes, this is exactly what I mean. The circumstances around acquiring each of these guys is a factor. And yeah, Angel Pagan's hair might be worth a signing on its own. A beautiful man.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 You predicted JJ would be a replacement player?... It was a bold prediction thread. I predicted he'd have 80 innings of an over 6.00 ERA. Prove me wrong bro! I think my actual prediction was that he'd look a lot more like the over 4.00 FIP he had on the road (in 2012) than the numbers he put up in Miami. People always talk about Oakland creating pitchers and then trading them off but Sun Life Stadium was a pretty good pitchers park and Marlins park is probably the best park in baseball for pitchers...at least when it comes to HR's.

They could be the same, I think it really depends on Saunders knee. I think Saunders has more upside and Bruce has more guarantee on consistency. Yeah, the Mets screwed up on exercising his option. They're certainly not the only team to misread the offseason though.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 So let's trade more prospects for Votto then, so that kids everywhere (the same ones who will tune out the moment the team gets old and sucks) can have a memory for a year. This.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Just to be clear, I loved the off-season AA had in 2015 (Donaldson, Travis, Martin, Saunders, etc). I hated 2013-14, and was kind of indifferent to 2010-12 since he was all over the place but at least seemed to have a long-term plan. Where 2015 went to mush was when Stro got hurt and since AA never accumulated any depth it lead to derpy moves left and right until he doubled down mid season. I'm sorry, as nice as those two playoff appearances were (one of which he wasn't even around for), I'm not going to look past how he got there. I want a team that wins every year, or at least has a chance to. Not one that makes the playoffs once and then the GM leaves as a hero so he doesn't have to deal with the backloaded aftermath and detonated upper minors that he created/left behind. Shapiro coming in saved the org. I think you underestimate how f***ing difficult that really is...and how many year in a row does the team have to win to qualify? Let's keep in mind the Red Sox finished LAST in the division in 2014 and 2015.

Perhaps you should go explore what Vince Carter and a couple of years of winning from the Raptors (which was followed by a decade of losing & mediocrity) did to influence the number of kids following and playing the game of basketball in Canada. Baseball Canada reported a 14% increase in participation in 2016 (vs. 2015) - primarily related to the blue jays fever. http://www.baseball.ca/baseball-participation-on-the-rise-across-canada Memories like 2015 & 2016 can have LASTING effects on children. It's the f***ing lame duck casual bangwagon adults who turn their backs as soon as the team sucks again. Adults are the f***ing worst - as is your negativity.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Nice. The rich man's Ryan Goins has been quite valuable to us.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 12, 2017 Author Posted January 12, 2017 Almost double what was projected by MLBTR, not that it really matters.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 That MLBTR figure was way too small to begin with. Barney made $2.5m in 2015. It wasn't going to be lower than that.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 I love having Barney and Carrera available as part time/backup players.
