RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 That and TO is near or at the bottom of teams to play for, for most FAs Why is that? I am assuming to make an statement like that you'd have some backing rather then opinions coming out of your *******

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 I would tend to agree with this. Next off-season is the time to make a splash. For position players, next year isn't significantly better than now. It's in starting pitching that there's much better options. Darvish, Arrieta, Cueto (player option) and Tanaka (player option), could all be top tier. The second tier (where we'd be more likely to be looking IMO) includes Liriano, Estrada, Cobb, Ross, Tillman, Pineda, Lance Lynn, Hellickson, Eovaldi and Duffy.

But now they have sold out seats and made Alcs back to back

Is Donaldson not on the cover of video games? How could that happen? He plays in Toronto. Toronto's market is more than 30 million. You think Bautista would have got more endorsement deals playing in Cleveland. ANy team that is winning no gets recognition. You really think the differences between Canada and the us are so great that players don't want to play in that foreign nation.lol. The us is foreign for half the league anyways. The only valid concern is the turf and the most recent edition of the turf is much easier on your body to play on.

I remember Adam Lind being vocal about crossing the border so often and how it's a real pain in the ass and that no one liked it. Most players, if given the option would prefer to be closer to where their home is to see their family, less travel, etc. Do you think Buerhle liked not being able to bring his dogs with him? Taxes are also apparently issue for many, although I think that concern is blown out of proportion and more comparative to teams with no state tax. It's more than just turf though but a winning tradition would surely help.

It's naive to think that if given the choice the majority of American players wouldn't pick an American team over a Canadian one. However, offering money and success (both team and personal i.e. chance to play a preferred role/position) can overcome this bias for most. And for some I'm sure it doesn't matter.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 Holy f*** you're stupid. I'm stupid because I think Toronto is a great city and a great place to play. Players go where the money is. Toronto isn't going to be the highest bidder, but in a hypothetical world where they were I don't think players would balk at the money because Toronto is a terrible place to play. You hurl a direct insult which is the very first forbidden rules of the board and I'm the idiot? You don't even try and articulate the opinions you disagree with. Pearce would have had multiple offers for similar money, but he jumped at the chance to play in Toronto. David price wanted to come here. Why?
brianf Verified Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 I agree that players will generally go where the most money is, but Toronto has always had a hard time luring players to play here for reasons mentioned above. For most, a couple million in total salary over 4 year's isn't much. Overpaying to get someone here isn't a good idea. As for the players that have been here and wanted to resign, it's because they were here and saw that Toronto is a great city. The problem is overcoming the stigma that is attached to Toronto by US players as well as the other issues (turf, not relevant for years, further from family, high taxes).

You state random opinions all the time, so I trust you understand. Edited December 28, 2016 by Brownie19

I'd say that every player is different in their reasoning. There are some players that if they are signing a 3 year or longer deal they like to move to the city they signed with year round. That unfortunately isn't possible with Toronto. Very few athletes I can think of bought homes in Toronto (Vince Carter is one that comes to mind...and he mildly trash talked the city when he left saying that there are no soul food places). Jalen Rose recently stated that no NBA player wants to sign in Toronto as the taxes kill you (he made it seem like his move from Chicago to Toronto cut his pay in half thanks to taxes). As fans we'll never know what the players really think of a city as the David Price's of the world will say positive things about every city they play in. What they say to each other is what really matters.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 The number one reason Toronto has had trouble attracting FA is the team has been s*** over the last 20 years.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 I would love that, especially if we let him play some outfield. I think we're too risk-averse for that haha, but the odd pinch hitting gig or DH duty could be possible?

Yeah you're right, TBH we're prob dreaming if we think we are going to offer a larger contract than LA or New York anyway. I just hope whoever signs him gives him a chance to test himself against MLB pitching.
