After bouncing a throw three-quarters to second base, Navarro lazily catches a framable strike for ball 3. None of the commentators even toss out light criticism.

Good thing he's been such a clutch hitter

OH wait that was 2 years ago....

Edwin and Jose would have never accepted a trade so stop discussing it

Not that it will hurt Edwin, but removing the qualifying offer greatly increases a free agent's stock.

If the Jays were out of it at the deadline and moved those two, I think they easily would have accepted it. Bautista in particular as the QO might hurt him this winter.

However you feel about the bunt, it has nothing to do with the fact that this team hasn't had a hit since the first batter of the game and that Estrada is perilously close to falling off a cliff.

Boy, this is a lot of grief for something as simple as a struggling hitter trying to contribute, almost getting an infield single, and moving a runner to third as a worst case scenario.

This team is not losing this game because they bunted and Tampa Bay didn't. Nobody said to the batters after Saunders, "hey, don't overshadow the bunt by getting more hits; let's try to eke out the next 8 innings".

It's mostly a reaction to people cheering it too much and the TV crew's told-you-so attitude for "unselfish play".

No doubt one of our OFers will lose a ball in the sun before this game is over.

You might as well have just put Carrera instead of OF in that post

That's silly. They both had significant financial incentive for accepting a trade, possibly as much as $10+M. Rejecting a trade would have been incredibly stupid.

Exactly. The issue here is the Jays are old, injured, and the pitchers are all running out of gas. Bunting or not bunting is inconsequential...

believe it or not I spent a crap load of money for tickets in Boston the last weekend. A relative who was convinced the Jays would be in it and the game would be awesome kept pressuring me to do it.

I refused and refused trying to explain to them that the Jays could collapse and the game might be nothing... then just around the time implosion began I gave in and bought expensive tickets.

Now I don't even think I'll get a chance to see Mookie Betts because he will be resting for the playoffs...

The money doesn't bother me as much as wasting a Saturday to go see Dalton Pompey and Moncando... or whoever the red sox play.

My friend threw the idea by me as well, though I said that could be a nothing series if the Jays have already clinched the AL East. Looks like the opposite is happening right now.

Make a 1-2% -WPA decision every game and then tell me how you feel when we finish the season a game behind the 2nd wild card spot.

Also, how is it that you make a post citing all kinds of things that look like numbers, and then end it with 'BUT WHO CARES ABOUT NUMBERS ANYWAY GUYS, AMIRITE!?????'

Oh. My. God.

How about you read my whole post???

Do I want a sacrifice? No.

Did Saunders have intentions of sacrificing? Doesn't look like it, you don't push a bunt to move a runner over you square early to ensure you make contact.

I DON'T want a sacrifice, but it happened. So what. -.013 WPA wouldn't have turned the tide from a 1 run to a 10 run inning. Play the percentages, lets do that. Saunders gets on 34% of the time in ALL Situations (I'm forgoing the splits here) so he gets out. Lets say Travis stays stationary, doesn't move. You have Edwin sac fly Travis to 3rd, Bautista walks and Tulo flies out to end the inning. 0-0. Lets say Saunders out moves travis over then you have a replay of last inning. There you go. Obviously there's that 34% but like I said the WPA went down 1%. Stop acting like it cost us 10 runs, Saunders has been useless.

To be clear, I don't think either should have been traded. I wouldn't have traded either. I just think the idea that they would have declined a trade to be absurd.

Please, please stop arguing about the bunt!! Set up a new thread if you care so much.

Your missing the point

Nobody cares about the bunt.. it's about .1 of a run either way.

People are just pissed that the casuals and announcers are focusing on something inconsequential.

If Buck and Path said - "The Jays have no young players, and no depth, that's why they are tired, the Red Sox have Jackie Bradley, Betts and Bogartz, average age of 24... and they have Moncada... if a key player gets injured Moncada could step in... he might strike but he might be awesome... Jays have Goins and Barney... oh they just bunted... who the f*** cares either way!"

That would be a rare taste of honesty... which is all the hard core fans ask for.

Wow, by your sweet logic, every single pitcher will throw a perfect game every single game. Look, you're wrong about a decrease in WPA% being unimportant. It is. It was a mistake to bunt, end of story. Reasoning that 'well it was only a SMALL mistake, and therefore unimportant' is just silly. Numbers aren't things that you get to employ when they're convenient and ignore when they aren't.

I like this guy.

This collapse is so much more devastating because it took us so long (20+ years) to get to this level of play, and will now most likely be over after this year for another long period of time.
