WONDERBAT Verified Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Pick up Nick Markakis on waivers this year and let Saunders walk.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 It's a bit of a false dichotomy anyways. It's not Reddick versus Saunders. They could sign both. They could sign neither. They only have CF locked up so there's two outfield jobs (assuming Bautista flakes) and maybe a DH job too (assuming EE flakes and knowing that Smoak's name is entirely erasable) so that's not an obstacle. It's about whether each guy is worth signing on their individual merit. With what's potentially coming off the books and a not negligible chance of a payroll increase, the money shouldn't be an issue if the value is judged to be there. Yeah that's true. But the post I was responding to made it an either or scenario. "No on Saunders but use his allocated money for Reddick."
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 You can put damn near anyone in LF and the average fan will think that they are "pretty good defensively." Except Hanley Ramirez. I still can't believe how bad he was.
JaysRap Verified Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Depending on what the Pirates want, we should absolutely be checking in on McCutchen. Coming off a down year, cost controlled, still viable defensively. Then dump a bunch of money at EE, grab a couple of decent relievers for your 8th and 7th, and we're good to go for another 3 year run at this.

Considering they just made a trade at the deadline I'm sure they have. Not that the Jays would have the pieces to get a deal done anyway.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I don't think he's an extension candidate, so put me in the no column. Questionable health combined with bad D and he becomes rather blah. QO him and hope he declines. If he does accept, you have a DH for 2017 and figure out somethng else for the outfield
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I find it amazing that so many fans would have rather cut Dickey, and pay him not to play at points over the past 4 years...but are apprehensive about offering a 1 year deal. Even if it's a few million too many it's got to be offered and isn't going to cost the Jays getting anyone else on a long term deal.

Someone pointed out worst case scenario where Saunders plays 80 games and gives us 1 WAR. Well so what, we call up Pompey or whoever else or maybe even make a deadline trade and try to fix LF for 2018. 1 year deals carry very little risk.

It would shock me if Huntington doesn't talk to his old boss about Stroman or Sanchez. Not saying that either should be moved but that would be the price and the relationship between the Huntington and Shapiro is strong. Cutch, even after this bad season, should be projected to be a 3.5 to 4.0 WAR guy.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Sanchez and Pompey for McCutchen and Taillon Pirates say no and the good relationship is over
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Sanchez and Pompey for McCutchen and Taillon do you follow other teams

Cutch is great, but that's a lot of control to give up for one year of him.

Drumcliff Verified Member Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 Living here on the coast, where Saunders is a hometown guy, I've followed his career since Double A ball in the Seattle system. I can sum up my view like this: Re-sign Saunders: LMAO. Qualify Saunders: LMFAO. A below-average outfielder who's often replaced in close games for defensive purposes; 13 for 88 with six ribs since the break as a cleanup hitter; a .200 hitter in his last 170 ABs with 60+ Ks. MIA at a time in the season when it really counts. Pass.
