Decent chance he would accept a QO I think, a la Rasmus

Yep. He won't get $18M AAV over multiple years, plus he seems to really like playing here.

if it were up to me I'd let them all walk and take the picks.

Good thing it's not, then. Most of us enjoy watching a winning team.

Offer all 3 the QO. Bautista walks, Saunders accepts and back the Brinks truck up for Edwin.

If Smoak & Saunders become the fallback plan to replace EE & Bautista, fans will be spontaneously barfing on the streets.

The casual fan only sees that Saunders is a Canadian. And thus, can do no wrong.

The problem is you can't guarantee Saunders will turn it down

I'm not really sure how to answer the poll. Does offering the q.o. count as no even though it could conceivably lead to him returning?

That ended up consuming 23.7% of the Astros payroll for this year and he has barely put up 1 WAR

Teams must be starting to get nervous about making these offers for the second tier players

Well it's not like there isn't work for him if he does accept.

I don't know. I've been hearing some chirping about his K's from casuals lately on Saunders. If he comes out of this nose dive all will be forgiven.

The Canadian thing is hardly a get out of jail free card. Fan base was pretty split on Lawrie at the time of his trade and mediocre canadian players like Corey Koskie didn't become favourites because of their passport. People like that Saunders is Canadian when he's doing well and don't really care when he's injured or struggling.

True

And I'm in favour of offering it. I think it's a risk worth taking as I said earlier

I was just opposed to the "planning on 3 draft picks" plan

Interesting. Weiters is at O.8 WAR after accepting his QO. Still, it's one year risk which makes it palatable with the chance they reach some of past WAR levels. Both Weiters and Colby have proven upside...they just haven't seen a lot of it this season.

Not to mention the Martin anger over his post season and start to 2016.

Similar yes. Not sure either team really wanted the offers to get accepted. Probably not.

One major difference:

Orioles payroll 116M

Astros payroll 69M

Yeah the Martin honeymoon was pretty much over as soon as the games started counting. I think people expected more offense.

There is no harm offering Saunders a QO. He may accept (which isn't the end of the world) and if he doesn't (then the Jays get a pick) or probably a chance to resign him cheaper later in the offseason if he doesn't sign a multiyear deal with another club.

Offer a QO and pray he declines. I don't like him tbh

His baseball instincts are remarkably poor. Watching him everyday you can see why the Mariners soured on him thought they were pretty dumb to diss their own asset and probably should given more consideration to the total value he could potentially provide instead of focusing on the negatives. As long as he's hitting, you take the good with the bad but he doesn't do much to support that skill. His base running is especially derpy.

Well he was coming off a 2.8 WAR season so they probably weren't too upset at the time. He sucked this year and now they can just not offer it to him this offseason and move on. Minimal damage done really.

I wouldn't touch Saunders with a multi-year contract. I would even be apprehensive of offering him the QO. He could easily become deadweight next year.

Put that 16 million towards Reddick please.

No. And if he continues to slump this badly QO won't be an option. I don't want him at 17 million a year even just on a one year contract.

Think about that for a second. Is Reddick even better than Saunders? This year he's not even close to being as good as Saunders.

Then factor in cost and Saunders at 1 year 16 million is such a no brainer over Reddick at 4 for 80 or whatever he ends up getting.

It's a bit of a false dichotomy anyways. It's not Reddick versus Saunders. They could sign both. They could sign neither. They only have CF locked up so there's two outfield jobs (assuming Bautista flakes) and maybe a DH job too (assuming EE flakes and knowing that Smoak's name is entirely erasable) so that's not an obstacle. It's about whether each guy is worth signing on their individual merit. With what's potentially coming off the books and a not negligible chance of a payroll increase, the money shouldn't be an issue if the value is judged to be there.

Down year for Reddick, and he has a much better track record than Saunders

Who says it's just a down year for Reddick? ISO fell off a table without any HR/FB luck.
