Maahfaace Verified Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Really depends on the terms Not really, with his injury history and lack of mobility in the OF it's a good bet the contract, if multi year, will be wasted money. I would however consider offering him a QO given the lack of free agent options available and his desire to land a multi year offer. He more than likely would turn it down. With the off chance of him accepting , a 1 year deal at 16.7 wouldn't be bad for a 2 win player. This all would depend on how he finishes the season of course.

I'd like to see Ceciliani get some more AB until Jose comes back. some people here jumped all over him for SSS of less than great AB, but he seems to have relaxed and is getting some hits while others aren't doing anything. I'll hard pass on Saunders. His minute of fame have come and gone. He is a complete liability defensively and there is no way he matches the first half of this season again

Yeah barring a complete collapse or injury I would offer him the QO easily. If he accepts we get a projected 2+ WAR OF on a 1 year deal for 16.7 M. That's pretty damn good when the FA crop is so thin. If he rejects it we get a pick. There isn't really any reason to offer him a 2 or 3 year deal IMO.
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Right now? Yah...offer the QO if he ends the season with similar numbers or better. If he drops off then no way. I would not offer a longer term deal unless he really lights it up for the rest of the season and even then the offer would be based on a DH role. Too many risks at this point.....
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 If Bautista and Edwin walk would it be worth it under the right contract to play 1st/DH for us? EDIT: Diving deeper - Just let him walk.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Next year draft is going to be crazy for us. Bautista, Edwin and Saunders QO... The three guys will get better offers in other places

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 (edited) How about 2 years 24M for Saunders Gives him more than the QO but less per year but 2 years of security. Players frequently will accept lower AAV for longer terms, and most of them probably hate 1 year deals Crazy to think 1/3 of the way through the season that would have seemed laughable. That he'd get 4 or more years at 15M. I don't think so now. Edited August 16, 2016 by G-Snarls
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 (edited) Next year draft is going to be crazy for us. Bautista, Edwin and Saunders QO... The three guys will get better offers in other places After thinking it over, I have no problem with all 3 being given the QO There's only a risk with Saunders and it's probably worth it For Bautista you're OK making the offer because you're not upset if he accepts it. That would be great actually. You hang on to him for another year with a legit chance at contention, and chances are he's worth it even with a modest season. It's less than a 3M increase for him. Then you can go through the same process next year. Edwin clearly won't accept it and will obviously get better offers from the Jays and others, so you're either keeping him for several years or collecting a draft pick. Saunders is exactly the type/caliber of player who is most constrained by the QO and it's probably worth making the offer, hoping to either collect a draft pick or get him on a cheaper 2 year deal or something. It's *probably* worth the risk for a team with a decent budget like the Jays have. Edited August 16, 2016 by G-Snarls
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Saunders now has "All Star" on his resume How much is that worth in the eyes of GM's?
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 With slim market this off season, it's worth 1 year risk on QO that he accepts(I think he will). He is turning into a pumpkin offensively after exceeding expectations 1st half. He is a defensive liability. 2 ish WAR ceiling with injury history. G-Snarls 2/22 or something like that might be worth it, but I just hate building around a pylon in the OF who K's 30% of the time.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Saunders would be a decent fall back to be our DH next year if Jose and EE walk. The question is do you qualify him before knowing the fate of Jose/EE? He could be this year's Dexter Fowler.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Lets see how his second half pans out. If he has a decent 2nd half, sure. If not, drop him.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Offer the OQ. If he declines, let him go. I wouldn't want to commit to him for multiple years.

You're not dealing with them one at a time in the order you want to You're juggling all if them at once
Governator Community Moderator Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 If Smoak & Saunders become the fallback plan to replace EE & Bautista, fans will be spontaneously barfing on the streets.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 If Smoak & Saunders become the fallback plan to replace EE & Bautista, fans will be spontaneously barfing on the streets. I don't think the casual fan would necessarily see the flaws with Saunders. The guy hit a ton this year. Things like defensive value and his injury history won't phase them. Remember how passionate casual fans were about Melky Cabrera? One mouth breather even said that the offseason was a failure unless they signed Melky. I'm pretty sure it was after the Donaldson trade too. People will want Saunders back at all cost and will be very upset if he goes to another team. And if Bautista and EE walk and Saunders doesn't, there will be some "at least we got Saunders" rationalizations.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 It's clearly a no brainer to offer him the QO. Money isn't a concern for me, but term is. Something around 2/34 would be reasonable for both sides, but 3 years would be a tough decision.

You can put damn near anyone in LF and the average fan will think that they are "pretty good defensively."
