I have to think there would be no purpose in having him pitch tonight against the Jays. If they're anywhere close to a deal, he will most definitely be skipped

Yeah... but maybe not totally. His K and BB rates are right in line with his career numbers... if you squint, maybe his HR regresses and he's something like his career 3.75 ERA/FIP/xFIP. There was also talk that they want him as a reliever, so there's that. Just playing devil's advocate, but he has posted 3 straight 2.3+ WAR seasons coming into 2016. If the cost is cheap, I wouldn't mind taking a shot on him.

Cashner would have been a good gamble if he had more years of control. Even now it might be okay if we put him in the bullpen even though he reportedly doesn't want to be a reliever.

Cashner as a long man / sixth inning guy could have value. He'll get destroyed as a starter in the AL, let alone the AL East.
