IBTrini Verified Member Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 It's boring but I think it's just a natural part of the game. Locking in a pitcher is unfair if the opposing manager can still pinch hit. Of course they could outlaw pinch hitting too, but then I'd ask how many rule changes do we need to go through for the sake of cutting off a few minutes of down time? There's changing rules to make the game better (like replay) and changing rules to make the game faster. If we really want to make the game faster without tampering with commercial breaks or actually enforcing the pitch time and batter's box rules, then we have to be prepared to degrade the actual strategy and intrigue of the game. I forgot about this as well - good point.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 I love soccer, but this isn't soccer. Stop adding so many time constraints. How about instead of limiting the time between pitches you limit the time managers have to call a review? Maybe speed up the review process? I don't have a problem with Grilli taking over 10 seconds to throw a pitch, but I have a problem with Gibby on the front step for over a minute while Hale's on the phone talking to the review team. If it's worthy of a review call it within 5-10 seconds of deadball

FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Manfred, don't f*** up our beautiful game. Leave it alone. Some of the most exciting moments in the history of the game come by way of those last inning pitchers. Joe Carter and Robbie Alomar come to mind. Kirk Gibson anyone? Just leave it. Dick.
BillBucknorslegs Verified Member Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 For all those defending the shift, I heartily agree. What the game needs is more of this: http://mediadownloads.mlb.com/mlbam/2014/08/30/images/mlbf_35789081_th_43.jpg It just makes sense.

If a player isn't intentionally trying to hurt someone let it play out.

If you don't like it - hit better. Unlike hockey, baseball doesn't need physical contact to be a great game. Why was a runner allowed to interfere with the fielders ability to make a play at 2nd base - but not when the fielder is trying to catch a pop up? It was beyond stupid.

Base runners should be allowed to try and get to the bag as fast as they can (like they would if they are stealing a base). Their sole intention should not be to interfere with the fielder (which is what the new rule does).
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 how are those 2 plays remotely the same? um - because both are interference to prevent the fielder from being able to make a defensive play.

You're allowed to yell when running past a fielder catching a pop-up, apparently.

Running the catcher and take out slides are part of the game. The intent to injure is different. The rules are stupid. They have replay now, if someone gets hurt, go to the replay and look for intent to injure. Without it, Cal Ripkens record will fall sooner than later. Buster Posey is soft and Chase Utley is a douche.

Governator Community Moderator Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Because this is stupid. Base runners should be allowed to try and get to the bag as fast as they can (like they would if they are stealing a base). Their sole intention should not be to interfere with the fielder (which is what the new rule does). Well that's an extreme example of intent that could hurt someone and most definitely should be removed from the game. Hence the name "chase headley rule", going out of the range of the bag that could easily result in injury. Those are exactly the type of plays that don't belong in the game... For every play like that though there's 99 regular ones that don't need instant replay, automatic outs, suspensions, etc. when there is no risk of injury and otherwise is just part of the game. um - because both are interference to prevent the fielder from being able to make a defensive play. No... even a contact sport like football you can't hit a receiver before he touches a ball... if a runner is sliding within range of a bag making an otherwise routine play of trying to break it up while there is no risk of injury to a fielder let it play out. It doesn't need a suspension or an extra automatic out. It's especially stupid when the infielders don't always do their part by stepping off to get out of the way but instead stay right on the bag. They don't get any push back for that.

I don't think anyone's advocating the runner should be allowed to go 3 feet past the base and body check the 2nd baseman. Its stuff like this that makes no sense: http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/63817564/v579743383/houmil-call-confirmed-brewers-dp-ends-game

devo Verified Member Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Its ironic that in the video you refer to, the runner does slide about 3 feet past the bag... He starts his slide before the bag (barely) and there is no contact whatsoever. Not comparable to the McRae "slide" whatsoever...

He slid in with his cleats high in a clear effort to make contact with the fielder. It wasn't even debatable, Rasmus was being an idiot.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 He starts his slide before the bag (barely) and there is no contact whatsoever. Not comparable to the McRae "slide" whatsoever... There's no contact on that play because the fielder came flying off the bag because he knew Altuve runs fast and didn't want risk a throw (with the tying run rounding 3rd base). If the fielder does try and hang in there to turn that DP, he get smoked by Rasmus. You can't let the result cloud your view. That same slide could have made a ton of contact with a fielder, possibly causing a major injury.
