Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Beltran doesn't want to play here. Hes made it clear hes not playing on turf anymore than he has too. Does he have a no trade clause?....if not this doesn't matter
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Does he have a no trade clause?....if not this doesn't matter He does. He can block trades to most teams. Toronto is 100% on his list.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Beltran doesn't want to play here. Hes made it clear hes not playing on turf anymore than he has too. I don't think he has a World Series ring yet, so maybe that would be some motivation for him.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I don't think he has a World Series ring yet, so maybe that would be some motivation for him. Yeah if we told him he would strictly DH, he might consider it.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I don't think he has a World Series ring yet, so maybe that would be some motivation for him. Perhaps but other contenders will be on him. I just don't see it happening after his very public comments bashing Toronto's turf. We offered him quite a bit more money a few years back but ultimately choose to play in St. Louis. The only way a Beltran move makes sense if they bringing him in to DH. He doesn't want to play the OF in Toronto. This would mean Encarnacion would have to play 1B everyday.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Yeah if we told him he would strictly DH, he might consider it. That's the other problem. He insists on playing the field. The Yankees want to DH him as much as possible. Apparently he complains everytime he sees himself listed as the DH. Great hitter but this guy is a big f***ing whiner.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I don't think he has a World Series ring yet, so maybe that would be some motivation for him. He has a chance at a World Series ring with the other 9 teams holding down a playoff spot, so what makes Toronto any different?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 He's lost velocity and it seems to have affected his hr/9 and walk rate. Both have jumped considerably. It could be a case of sss but I think he would get destroyed in the AL East 6IP, 4H, 1ER, 0BB, 9K performance vs. San Francisco last night. Yeah he hasn't been that good this season like in previous seasons, I've acknowledged that. Though considering his previous success and what the acquisition cost it would take to acquire him, having him around as a 5th starter isn't that bad if the Blue Jays can't go after their plan A, plan B, etc.
worldchamps2016 Verified Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 For me the two places that need to be upgraded are a second catcher and a lefty for the pen. There isn't much out there as far as players on expiring contracts at either position so i'd expect to have to overpay at least a bit to acquire anything decent at either position. I'd like to see them take a serious run at Lucroy and Will Smith from the Bucks.Lucroy has a team option for 2017 and Smith has two more years of control after this season so expect to have to empty the cupboards to entertain any thoughts of a deal. Not sure if Pompay,Harris,SRF,Pentacost, and Alford would get it done but i'd give that to land the pair. Plan B would be Chooch from Philly and Boone Logan from the Rockies.Logan is a FA after the season and Chooch has an option for 2017.The prospect capital wouldn't be nearly as steep so i'm not sure this wouldn't be a better strategy for the long run.

You realize Lucroy is arguably the best catcher in baseball (behind Posey) and you plan to have him as our back up catcher? I mean I know Thole sucks balls, but lol.

As a matter of fact I do realize that Lucroy is a top 5 catcher in baseball.I also realize that that anyone that thinks Lucroy would be backing up Martin, and not the other way around,is a touchdown or is drunk and should go home.I also realize Martin is 33 years old and is under contract for 3 more years after this one.I also realize he could probably benefit from a lightened workload for a season and a half so maybe, just maybe,he isn't a total dumpster fire for the last two years of his contract at 20M per.

Bad asset management to give up prospects for Lucroy when Martin already here.

worldchamps2016 Verified Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Bad asset management to give up prospects for Lucroy when Martin already here. That's pretty rich coming from a guy who's suggested we trade for Erwin Santana and Robbie Ray while Hutch sits in the minors. I'd prefer the Jays actually try to win a world series than dwell in mediocrity hoping to squeak into a wildcard spot.
worldchamps2016 Verified Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Saying its bad asset management is being very generous. It's really only bad asset management if you think the speks I listed will turn into something. I personally think there isn't much there other than name value.

The only way your scenario begins to make any sense is if they ship Martin out, which in itself would be a rather large task.

You're welcome to your opinion.I think it's an excellent idea to try to preserve Martin considering his age and how many years he still has left on his contract. It's not like Lucroy isn't a huge upgrade on Martin.Considering Martin is in the midst of a barely above replacement level season.

As far as the bucks saying f*** off.....Meh they're f***ed in the head if they don't trade Lucroy soon. They wont be a contending team during his tenure.Unless they are very sure they can extend him they would be beyond stupid not to move him.

Martin is our starting catcher for the next 3 years, unfortunately 20MM says so. Making him a #2 would kill any potential future trade value in him. I understand what your thinking is but Thole is pretty much here as long as Dickey is which could still be another year or two.

Although I find your first point to be utterly absurd it's likely also true. The second is a ridiculous notion.Martin already has no trade value going forward and will most likely become a negative asset as soon as next year.Whether he plays 60 games or 100 is irrelevant. The third is simply conjecture and not worth discussing.

They have much bigger areas of concern than tying up more money at catcher. That might be your pipe dream but that's not reality. This whole concept isn't worth discussing.

Gutting our farm system to bring in Lucroy isn't worth discussing.

If by "more than adequate" you mean replacement level then sure.If by "gutting the farm" you mean selling a bunch of overrated s*** to acquire one of the best players in baseball,at a position we are currently getting replacement level production from, then ya.

Russell Martin 130 wRC+ in June 122 wRC+ in July We were getting below replacement level production from him for the first what, 6 weeks? I think he was playing through an injury, I know he had major neck problems as well and he seems to have sorted things out. They couldn't possibly rely on Thole so he played through it but probably needed to be on the DL.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Since I see people talk about Cargo, what about Blackmon? He's flew under the radar after tearing s*** up last year, he seems to be having a decent season so far this season home and on the road, and he's an impending FA. A package of him and a reliever from them maybe?

The two best options, that could be available, are Lecroy and Chooch. With the window closing possibly as soon as the 2017 season taking the chance that Martin stays healthy for the duration of the season, and playoffs, could easily end up costing a championship.

Martin is hitting better than Lucroy right now, they don't need to shore up anything. It's wasting money and prospects for little gain. You're heavily undervaluing Martin and highly overvaluing the role of a second catcher. Regardless, none of this is happening so it's not worth discussing & you can stop feeding the bait.

If you think all we have to offer is a "bunch of overrated s***", what makes you think we would be the top bidder for one of the best players in baseball? Stick to your pipe dream all you want, but it's silly. There are undoubtedly teams out there who are much more in need of a starting catcher and able to make a stronger offer. Martin had a bad start, time to let it go and focus on what this team actually needs.

One that might cost a bit but I see this as advantage to us in getting both from Colorado in a package!! I Would be wiling to give them pillar, Pompey and SRF !!! How close would we be at that point? They get younger controllable outfielders, salary relief of 23+ mill next and savings now and get a staring pitcher they need more then us right now too!
