Who do we target @ the deadline??

I would take a flyer on Melvin Upton Jr if San Diego would pretty much give him away and eat half his salary next year.

Eh, I'm not even sure with Gray. I mean, it could just be a slight mechanical/usage change away from a fix, but he's not really trending well. Walks are up, K's are down, FIP/xFIP are very mediocre. He looks like a #3/4 right now, and I wouldn't give up SRF for that.

No, but I'm willing to bet he could be had. San Diego might be motivated to move him in a deal with Upton to actually get a decent package back without eating any of Upton's salary for next year.

 

Upton on his own wouldnt net anything substantial, but adding in myers before he gets expensive in arbitration and they could probably get 2 really good prospects and a lottery ticket

Upton has a 1.5 WAR right now. He's a pretty useful player again. Not sure the Padres have to dump him anymore, but he would be a nice fit for the Jays OF if the Pads picked up a chunk of the tab. I don't think they would though.

Yea he can be had, but I think we're too drained to get him. He's having his best season so far no? Top 5 offensive player in the NL, they can get more than what we can scrape from us I think. Could be wrong tho

The point I think is we pick up that chunk in exchange we don't give them that much back. Eventually we're giving them a salary relief. 16M for a 1.5 war player at age 32 isn't hot we're doing them a favour

Realistically the Jays are likely going to need 2 OF next year with Bautista and Saunders likely gone, unless they're ready to give Pompey a full time corner OF spot, which is really looking questionable right now.

 

You could make a trade for 1 and still sign Reddick... WITH reddick hopefully not being tied to compensation if the As trade him at the deadline this year

I was speaking more in the hypothetical sense rather than advocating a Reddick signing.

Has Carrera played himself into your 2017 plans? Perhaps as part of a time share with Pompey or a cheaper FA outfielder. I don't completely trust him, but the batting line is very nice and not BABIP fueled, not to mention positive value in the field and on the base paths.

They fixed his mechanics, from what I read. His walks are dramatically down and his K rate remains. His GB% has also exploded up.

 

He looks like a future ace, he would be near untouchable unless the return is amazing imo. He likely will be untouchable anyways though with Shapiro at the helm.

I'll take him on the bench, but I'm not sure I buy him as a legit 114 wrc+ seemingly out of nowhere.

 

His Ks are down, walks and ISO are up... there's likley some regression there but he can probably stick around. A lot of his line right now is due to a wholly unsustainable .444 woba against left handed pitching, which puts him 18th in all of baseball with minimum 50 PA(Donaldson is at .451 just for reference)

 

A major plus in his favour is 3 more years of control with numbers that generally don't get paid much in arbitration.

I don't expect us to bring in a big name or star, but we could certainly make smaller moves that would have a big impact on the team the remainder of the year. Grilli has made a big impact on the pen.

Upton has negative value, that's quite a bit to give up for a guy having his first fully healthy season in a while, not saying it wouldn't be a good gamble but its not a no brainer imo.
